“Sounds good to me,” was her reply.
On a snowy, wintry Tuesday in 2004 I left my home and drove the five miles to Lisas home. The roads seemed to have been cleared of any snow or ice. I drove to her home, parked the car, and walked gingerly up her front steps then knocked on her front door. I was greeted with a warm smile and the smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls.
We spent the next two hours working on our study preparation together. We were trusting the Lord to lead us to the right topic. We prayed over several topics and then settled on the one we felt God was asking us to teach. We then proceeded to work out the details, ending our morning with a time of prayer thanking God that he led us and assured us this was his topic choice and not ours.
Saying our goodbyes, I left her home and headed back to my car. I debated whether to take the steps down to the street, or walk her sloping driveway. Because there was still a little snow on the steps, I chose to walk the driveway. Little did I know that her driveway was covered in black ice. I reached the bottom of the drive when my foot slid from under me.
Down I went - hard.
At first I thought it was simply a bad fall. My study books flew one direction. My purse another direction, with me in the middle. But it didn’t seem too serious, at first glance. Imagine my surprise and horror when I looked down at my right leg and noticed I had a compound fracture.
I panicked.
“Oh God, what have I done,” I cried.
“Breathe Marilyn,” I told myself. “God has got this. Trust him. Don’t panic.”
I did what any normal red-blooded individual would do in this situation, I yelled.
“LISA!”
“LLLLIIIIII-SSSSAAAA”
No response from Lisa. She had gone inside her house and couldn’t hear me yelling from the bottom of her driveway.
I kept yelling and telling myself, “Marilyn, Trust God. He is going to help you. Don’t trust in yourself and your yelling. There has to be a way for you to get help.”
Yet, I kept yelling.
Going to her window to rescue her distressed cat who kept walking back and forth along the back of her couch, Lisa noticed me lying in her driveway. She immediately hurried out her front door, coming to see what had happened.
She called for an ambulance who was there in record time. Getting me loaded onto the gurney, I was transported to the hospital.
I kept repeating this verse over in my heart, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding’. Yes Lord, I trust you. I don’t know a single doctor in this hospital, but I trust you. If left to me, I would panic, but I’m not going to trust my thoughts, but totally trust you.”
I arrived at the hospital and was immediately seen by a doctor who determined I needed surgery as soon as possible. I did not know this doctor. Had never met him. Didn’t know anything about him, but thank God, he knew.
God chose the best doctor for me. I had nothing to worry about. He repaired my broken leg beautifully. If it had been left up to me I doubt I could have chosen such a wonderful and capable doctor. God knew what I needed, when I needed it and simply asked me to trust him. I trusted myself into the care of this doctor, but more importantly, I trusted that God had chosen the best for me.
Three months later I was walking again. My broken leg had healed perfectly. I even had an opportunity to share with my doctor the goodness of God.
This verse has become my life verse. It has been my go-to verse over and over again.
Trust in the LORD. There is no one else I need to trust in.
With ALL your heart. Not half your heart, but ALL your heart.
LEAN NOT on your own understanding. Leaning on me doesn’t always end well, but leaning on Jesus is a win-win.
My heart will always trust in you.
