Surrounded by books about farms and animals, textures and colors, mythical creatures and spells, it lay silently, yet blazing with light. A 4-year-old’s birthday gift in a pile of presents, it was one of many books he received that day. Would it be noticed? Honored? Even read? As this unique gift book about the love of Jesus was swept into a pile of other books, I wondered, did the adults know this was the only one with eternal value? Did they even care about eternity?

Nevertheless, there it was: the odd book among so many. It shined so brightly that I was sure everyone would notice. How could they not? However, this was not the case, and I felt sad seeing it lost in the pile. Yet somehow, despite appearances, I knew it was not lost. The Lord reassured me that His Word would not return void or without purpose. The Word in this little book is alive and powerful. May the 4-year-old’s mom be drawn to it so that she, too, will feel the love and presence of Jesus.

In twenty years or so, that book will resurface, as I have prayed it would. Someone, if not the then 24-year-old, will find it and discover its words of love and life. I am sure of this because I have asked the Lord to preserve it and reveal it at the proper time.

Is it odd? Yes, but so are we who have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light. Like that little book, we will never fit in with all the others, but we have the Words of eternal life.
