Topic: BEACH (09/01/22)
Pastor Steve Jamison had an interesting week. He found out that one of his former youth group is the superhero Mariness, that another girl is a mer-person, and that she expected him to perform a marriage ceremony underwater. The last part was only possible because the operator of the local Christian bookstore came from the future and had some mystery potion that would let him breathe underwater. Rebecca Brand, AKA Mariness, gave Steve a small packet of pills that she claimed would allow him to live underwater for an hour at a time.

Steve thus found himself sitting on a rock underwater, after taking the first pill and walking into the surf off the beach, talking to Lori Lang and her merman husband Eecuddas. He listened as Lori described her "marriage" to Eecuddas as being from their high priest’s edict, as well as her unhappiness with that. “I wouldn’t mind getting married on the beach, Pastor Steve, but my… husband can’t exist out of water for as long as I can."

Eecuddas finally entered the conversation, through Lori who had to translate Eecuddas’s words into English. “I don’t know why you can’t have our wedding on the beach. Doesn’t this man just have to declare us married? I can hold my breath that long, Lori.”

Steve responded, “Eecuddas, it’s not that simple. I appreciate that you don’t want your future to flounder on this point, but there is a whole ceremony to being wed on the surface.”

Eecuddas asked, “How long can you stay underwater? I understand that most beach dwellers can’t breathe in my world for long."

Steve answered, “An hour at a time, plenty of time to perform the ceremony. I presume Lori’s family will be there. How about yours?”

Eecuddas bubbled, “I swear to Curi that I’ll try to get my family there if it’s important.”

Lori broke in, “Curi is the name of their deity.”

Steve nodded, having already guessed that.

Steve asked Eecuddas, “I just need to know one more thing. How does your family feel about you marrying outside your faith?”

“My father, the high priest, declared us married by our laws. He isn’t very fond of my wife’s faith, but he accepts that she’s not going to change. As our marriage is foretold in prophecy, he has told me he doesn’t want her faith to beach that prophecy.”

Steve wished he could meet Eecuddas’s father, but he decided he’d simply have to settle on delivering the Gospel message at the wedding. He looked at his watch. "I have to return to the beach and the air, since the hour is almost up.

Lori and Eecuddas said their farewells, and the three of them agreed to meet the next day, after assuring Steve that the forecasted storm might hit the beach, but not be a problem underwater.

As Steve strode on to the beach, he wondered about the prophecy, and decided to ask the high priest after the wedding. He also mused how he could perform a marriage ceremony when he didn’t speak the language. He decided to ask Rebecca if her benefactor had anything that could help.
