It was a hot summer day, and hoping to find relief from the heat, I went to the sea shore. The sun had set and night was creeping over the land. I sat on the wet sands and watched the moon shine brightly on on a dark velvet sky studded with diamond stars. The cool breeze wafting in from the ocean, the soft lull of the waves as they playfully rolled over each other, the serene beauty that surrounded me was the healing touch my tortured nerves needed. What is the secret of this power that the beach has to calm my soul ? I found the answer to my question in a strange way.
It happened when I was traveling by plane from Hartford, CT, to Orlando, FL. I had a window seat. The sky was bright and clear. Looking out of the window, I had a bird's eye view of the landscape below. I saw the blue waves with frothy white foam and the dark green tree tops. I also saw a light tawny colored ribbon separating the green from the blue. I realized that this is the beach, marking the border between the earth and the sea. I imagine this is not a comfortable place for the beach to be in.
How could it be a comfortable place when there is no protection from the heat of the sun, or from the thunder and lightning and storms not to mention the constant buffeting of the waves ? Nor from the mighty Tsunamis that come charging form the depths of the oceans? And yet when fury of the waves are spent, the beach is still there. I wonder if the beach knew that she was created by God with a purpose and no power can alter this purpose. And so she remains serene and calm through all the challenges of nature. This is the serenity that hovers all over the beach, calming and soothing everyone who comes there.
If, this is the secret of the serenity of the beach, I pray that God will bless me with this power. I want the power to meet all life's challenges with implicit trust that God created me with a purpose and He will see me through all difficulties, until that purpose is fulfilled. And like the beach, may this power over flow through me to all those who need it.
