Topic: AUTHORITY (04/14/22)
“There’s Donna and Diane, talking again,” our 5th-grade teacher announced to the whole class. We were distraught when she said this because we were pretending to be mad at each other so that she couldn’t accuse us of talking in class. Our plot had failed! The teacher’s wrath was to be feared because she had the authority to call us out, set us aside, and send us to see the principal. He would call our parents, which would turn into a dreaded situation.

As it turned out, the teacher cut us some slack when Diane and I told her how we were trying to be good. There was a hierarchy at school, and we knew it well. All adults were authority figures to us, and we owed them respect, but some were higher up than others. We dared not even speak up to them. Even our parents were authority figures, and we answered them with “yes, ma’am,” or “yes, sir.”

My mom called the lady next door, “Madge.” To me, she was “Mrs. Miller.” One day, I was testing the water, so I said something about “Madge.” My mother reprimanded me sharply: “What did you call her? You are to address her as ‘Mrs. Miller.’ Do not ever let me hear you calling an adult by their first name!”

What a different era that was. There was order in school, in church, and at home. Yes, we were in church every Sunday morning. The Pastor was the highest authority figure there. I don’t remember ever speaking with him one on one.

Years later, as n adult myself, I still have the respect for authority that I learned as a child. Knowing now that the highest power belongs to God, my Savior, I am appalled that there are those, even higher-ups in government, who do not yield to or even recognize His authority. How peaceful our world would be if they would receive Him!

Jesus is the highest Authority and the Answer to all that plagues humanity. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. One day, soon, I hope, He will be back on this earth, and the government will be upon His shoulders.

I enjoyed this discourse on authority. The introductory paragraph may have been a bit easier to understand-🤔 bearing in mind that we readers have just arrived on your scene. It was such a rich opportunity to add colour to the young schemer’s plan. I didn’t do a word count but there seemed to be enough room in that classroom to give us a little more 😄.
And, yes I hope our Sovereign authority comes back soon too.
