It was a regular occurrence at the Christian Bookstore that I owned and managed at the end of each year. Whatever merchandise remained at the end of the day on December 31 had to be counted piece by piece, then section by section. All the sections were added together to determine the final dollar amount for the merchandise in stock at retail value. We then applied proper wholesale discounts and thus determined the total dollar amount of all the inventory at cost. This is the amount on which the store was responsible for paying taxes for that year. Even so, it was a blessing that God had provided us with all of these treasures. He gave us wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to work the store for His glory, and then He filled it with all of these “pleasant riches.”

“Through wisdom, a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
By knowledge, the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.” (Proverbs 24:3-4 NKJV)

It was all about taking stock of what we had and then evaluating it. The importance of correct numbers in an inventory cannot be overstated. The accuracy of the count had to be without flaw.

The first of the year also signals the need for personal inventory. By this, I mean we need to count our attributes that are gifts from God to use in working in His Kingdom. It is all from Him and for Him.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:17 NKJV)

Of necessity, our inventory may reveal some things that are no longer useful or that have served their purpose. That way, we will count only the right things as valuable enough to retain and develop for the Master’s use.
