Candle wax and wonder
Deep pools of dark and light
The jag-toothed broken windows
Pour sensory delight.

A foot-worn wood stair entry
Tells of heavy and of light
Of baptismal beginnings
And departures from this life.

I will to stand and listen
Perchance history will reach
To bring a note of Evensong
or hear a Preacher teach.

Would the old walls kindly render
Stories from their past
Where actions and routine practice
Were kept to lift the heart,

Into His Holy Presence
To worship at His feet
Or lean upon the Savior’s breast
And bask in Love so sweet?

Did routine habit unsheathe
the double-edged sword
and draw God’s eye upon their heart
for a love He could reward?

Right there I make a promise
To myself and to the Lord
That routine – while so special
Must be of one accord

To reinforce my living
The reborn state of life
That the red cord Blood of Jesus
Remains my one delight.
