Oh! The Church is Having Another Pot-Luck Dinner
(And I'm supposed to make Carrot Salad)

After three days of waiting, and hands sore from grating
I wondered if ever I'd see
That some powerful grater would, sooner or later
Be bought and then given to me!

For carrots, my nemesis, being the genesis
of Carrot Salad, alas
Were hard as some granite from deep in the planet,
(I don't want to sound lewd or crass)

But keeping control of those sharp, tiny holes,
And then chopping the onions so fine
Was incredibly painful and I was disdainful
And ready to run and resign.

The recipe, mother's, I should have used others,
Since this one was tough and obtuse,
For it used a whole peck (what a pain in the neck)
Of the toughest old carrots in use.

Then in through the door came my mother once more
With a big box with hearts and my name
So I opened it, hoping and looking and groping
To find something new, not the same:

‘Twas mechanical joy (for this sore grating boy)
With more pleasure than can be extolled,
The food processor whirred while I measured and stirred;
Carrot Salad at last was controlled!
