The Royal Play of Loyalty

‘’Daaa-ndaaa- daaa-ndaaa! The giant gong is sounded, signifying a majestic beginning of an extraordinary meeting. The room is full of much glory. The deep silence is matched glorious ambience. Transcendental peace abounds. Rev 21:11, 22:5.

‘’Fellow Trinity, and Prophet Samuel, you are well come. Today is for interviewing candidates for the first king of Israel (KoI),’’ the Chairperson solemnly announced.

‘’Israelites have rejected me! They want to be like other nations! Prophet Samuel has been invited to attend. These stiff-necked guys want a king.’’ Ex 34:9.

Turning to Samuel, he beckoned him to brief the meeting.

‘’My Lord, thank you for this blessing to be here,’’ Samuel said, humbly, with awe. I have identified two families to provide the KoI. The Jesse and Kish families. Jesse has provided eight candidates and Kish, one candidate. The seven sons of Jesse do not meet the Trinity’s criteria. But the 8th son, David, whom Jesse had not presented until I insisted, turned out to be a superior candidate. Saul is second candidate, my Lord.

Saul’s Curriculum Vitae:

Good persona. ’A head taller than all Israelites.’ Handsome. Popular. Liar. Timid of responsibility. 1 Sa 10:22-24

David’s Curriculum Vitae:

Young. Ruddy. Handsome. Herd’s boy. Expert Harpist. Poet. Singer. Killed bears, lions and Goliath. Clean heart. Sa 16:12-14, 17:36.

Results:

First: David. Second: Saul.

Verdict:

Analysis: The nation’s spiritual status, quality of minds and hearts of Israelites from Eden, through Egypt, desert to Canaan, their needs, vanities and wants. Candidates’ past, present and future minds and hearts, needs, deeds and what they deserve.

Integrated Conclusions:

Israel’s wants dominate needs. She does not want what it needs! She deserves Saul, not David. David does not deserve Israel yet! All Israelites want now is looking like other nations. Saul is their suitor. Saul is appointed the first KoI. Prophet Samuel, go and appoint Saul first KoI. The meeting is adjourned sine die.’’

So Saul became the first KoI, not God. David went back to his parent’s home to pasture animals. He zealously developed his soft and hard skills. One time he killed bear. On another occasion, when a lion tried to snatch his sheep, he killed it.

When Saul’s army went to war with the Philistinean army, led by giant Goliath, David volunteered to fight the abusive, pagan, uncircumcised bastard. When his brothers overheard their little braggart negotiating to fight the terrorist, they mocked him and ordered him to disappear back to his sheep and leave men’s tasks to adults. Little did they anticipate that history was unfolding before them! One moment led to another only to see the giant falling like a tree and David carrying his head to the king who won the battle, courtesy of technical assistance of a mere sling and two little pebbles.

David soon found himself serving in king’s palace, as a harpist to assuage his master’s severe depression. Though he experienced persecution, he gained coaching and KoI’s son in-law-ship.

Finally, the day of reckoning came.

‘’Samuel, go to Jesse and anoint David, KoI, for I have rejected Saul!’’ God directed Samuel. Done.

Then David ordered that the Ark of the Covenant be brought to the City of David.

Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might. 2 Sa 16:14.

Michal, his wife and Saul’s daughter, saw him dancing almost nakedly, despised him in her heart and later mocked him before slave servants.

David said to Michal:

“It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.” 2 Sa 16:15-22.

David’s royal para-nudic type of dancing must have been evoked by a historical cause! He must have suddenly experienced a spasmodic chain of emotional events:

‘’ Here I am – king. Once, marginal last son of Jesse. Like Joseph, my ancestor, envied and hated by my siblings. Condemned to be with animals in the wilderness. Vulnerable to bears and lions. But God lovingly protected me, even from Goliath. Now, I am honoured to be KoI!’’

It was a Davidian moment– an exquisite display of sublime loving-kindness and adoration, transcending all human understanding, not even his marital royal wife – Michal, daughter of king Saul, his predecessor.

I’m beginning to enjoy your visits and personal analyses of Court Room assemblies . Some of the proceedings are above my head, but as I follow the report I can, from this side of the Cross participate in David’s joy- contrasted eloquently by Saul and his daughter’s lack.
