“Excuse me,” I said, as I lightly tapped the lady in front of me. “Do you know why we’re standing in this line?” She just smiled, then turned around without saying a word.
“How odd,” I thought. Turning to the person behind me, I asked the same question…but still no answer. Looking around, I noticed no one was talking, however, I heard faint voices off in the distance. I wanted to walk away, but I couldn’t. It was as if something was holding me there.
The road we were on had a misty fog around it and was unusually narrow…two people couldn’t stand side by side, yet the one parallel to us was extremely wide. Both roads were leading us to the voices…but why?
Eventually, we crossed over a hill and the fog lifted. A light shined in the distance, growing brighter as we moved forward. As hard as I tried to make sense of what was happening, I simply couldn’t.
“Come closer,” said a person draped in white clothing, to those far ahead of me. Finally, someone was speaking. Surely this mystery was about to be explained.
One by one, each person was ushered through an archway, which had the most vibrant stones I’d ever seen. They shimmered with blinding brilliance and the sun’s rays were shining down on them like a spotlight. It was a sight to behold.
As I neared the man up ahead, I saw two doors…one to my left and one to my right. Those in my line stopped at the archway momentarily, then directed to go to the door on my left. Beautiful, sounds came from beyond it…but as I moved closer, sounds of moaning and crying echoed from the door to my right. Incredible heat, darkness, and smoke shot out each time it opened.
“How could anyone breathe in there?” I wondered. “Why were the people from the other line being sent inside?”
“Come, Come,” the man in white said as I stepped up to the archway. “What is your name?”
“I’m Carolyn,” I answered.
Walking behind a table, he opened an enormous book. Ever so gently he turned each page…searching…studying…looking up and down each one with a fine eye.
“Match!” he cried out with a big smile. “We have a match!”
In total confusion, I stood still as the door to my left began to open. The sound of a great voice, like mighty rushing waters, filled the air… “Well done my good and faithful servant…welcome home.”
“Home?” I questioned.
Something was compelling me to walk through the door, but I wasn’t so sure I wanted to go there. Just as I’d had no control over leaving the line, I had no control of this either. Cautiously I stepped through the door and met a guide who’d been waiting for me. Thousands of people were inside…strangely, all dressed in white. Beautiful singing was coming from one area, while sounds of praise in another… exclaiming over and over again, “Holy is the Lamb.”
Trumpets quickly sounded, and a voice cried out… “Behold, the Lamb of God is here!”
Immediately, we fell to our knees. Scared and excited, I dared not look up, for we were in the presence of Jesus. “Welcome home my children,” said our savior.
Instantly it became clear. I really was home, my heavenly home…and just like that, I woke up.
It had been a dream. Feelings of relieve and sadness flooded over me. The sounds of people moaning in agony…the smoke and flames, haunted me. It made me recall Matthew 22:13:
“Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Maybe this was what the dream was meant to do…haunt me into getting out of my stagnate lifestyle and realize there are lost people that I dearly care about. Family and friends, who didn’t know Jesus, came to mind. It’d been years since I’d shared Him with anyone. Jesus’ light in me is supposed to help lead others to Him, but my flame was not even a flicker anymore.
Let this be my wake-up call to share Jesus more often, so none of those I love have to walk through that door on the right.
