Is your destination something that you deem worthy of your total concentration? You are always on the move, sometimes physically, sometimes within the confines of your head. It is easy to forget that the road that leads to life is a narrow one. The obstacles that would call you into a side street are many, and they don’t necessarily have to be things that you would call “bad.” They can be reasonable goals, plans, and purposes, but if they cause you to detour from the narrow road, you must get rid of them. It is hard to do because the world, the flesh, and the devil are constantly working to trip you up. But take heart, Jesus is with you, and He cheers you onward.
Straight and narrow, yes, but there are bridges, hills, and valleys that you must navigate along the way. Thorns, stones, and downed trees are obstacles you have to clear away so that you can see the path they are obscuring. You may be tired or sleepy, but you have to stay forward-focused. It may be cold or hot, wet, or dry, but you must keep putting one foot in front of the other. It is very tempting to search for an easier way when it gets uncomfortable, but there is none.
Because you are human, you have undoubtedly been attracted to some glittering thing that the world offers. You want it! First, you turn your head and look at it; it looks so good. Then you want to follow your gaze. God won’t mind, will he? Stop! It is not worth it! Get your eyes back on the narrow road!
Let’s say you accomplish something you are proud of. Oh, how you love the praise and adoration from all the people surrounding you. They want to throw a party for you. Wow, you are flattered. Your flesh wants to celebrate in ways that may be harmful. Do not go down that street! Instead, thank them, give them your regrets, and go celebrate the Lord’s goodness in granting you this success.
Soon, along comes a little demon to lie to you by offering some pleasure that feels right but you know is wrong. You have the authority to rebuke him in the mighty Name of Jesus, so do it!
You can place a good thing, such as love for your children, on a higher level of importance than your service to God. That is harmful to both you and your children. You must love and care for them, but your love for God must come first. Always keep your priorities in order.
You are told to “… lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares you, and run with endurance the race that is set before you.” (Hebrews 12:1 NKJV)
Anything (weight or sin) that lures you or tempts you to step off the narrow road must be rejected. How? There is only one way:
“looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 11:2 NKJV)
Onward towards your destination on that straight and narrow road you go. What joy awaits you!
