Topic: TASTE (07/01/21)
As the early morning light seeped through the gaps in the window shade, it cast an eerie glow across the kitchen table where Debbie sat preparing to enjoy her breakfast. A cup of coffee sat to her right, but before her was a delicacy she hadn’t indulged in for many months. She loved grapefruit, couldn’t get enough of it, but it had been something passed down to her by her mother and when her mother passed so many things that she once held dear had been allowed to fade into obscurity. Why now? Why had she chosen this day to reintroduce grapefruit into her life? Unable to identify an answer that made any sense, she scooped a portion of the fruit into her mouth with a spoon and smiled as the taste, that unique taste, exploded inside her and everything around her transformed.

Debbie was still in a kitchen, but no longer her own. This kitchen had been ruled over by her mother and she had done so with so much love. Her mother was seated across from her dressed simply as she did except for very special occasions. She had taken seriously the biblical encouragement to dress modestly but it never took away from her beauty. She radiated with the love of God and it flowed into everything she did. They ate mostly in silence. Conversation seemed to get in the way of just enjoying each other’s company and, of course, the grapefruit that they loved. Being back with her mother was a gift that Debbie didn’t want to end. But, like all such things it did eventually fade away and she was back alone with her thoughts. She had experienced a moment, possibly just that, but it been rich and she reveled with joy.

Memories can come from so many places, but our senses have the capability of bringing them richly to life as if we are actually there. Debbie wondered if it would happen again, but strangely she hoped it wouldn’t. It had been a unique experience and something she would cherish for the rest of her life. Time with the people that we love is limited but that is also what gives it value. In Christ we do have hope for the future and Debbie was convinced that one day she would be reunited with her precious mother and they would once again enjoy time together. Whether or not there would be grapefruit in eternity their time together would be wonderfully rich. For now though she has had one of those God moments and so she will just sit, ponder, and be.

Nothing like a good wallow to bring us back to reality. I also have fond memories of my mother and her chocolate cake, served formally with tea in cups with saucers. Thank you for sharing.
