There was a narrow gravel road, so I followed it. Shortly, I began to hear faint sounds in the distance. Just beyond a bend in the road was a pavilion. There were lots of people dressed in their finest. It seemed odd they’d be so dressed up in the park. Curious, I sat down on a nearby bench. Though I was in full view, they didn’t seem to notice me, as if I were invisible.
The people gathered around a man that appeared to be giving instructions. I couldn’t hear him, but it must have been exciting because the people shouted and clamped while he talked. As I watched, I began to hear sounds of an approaching vehicle and stepped behind the bench. A black vehicle rounded the bend, flew past me, and stopped beyond the pavilion.
“What in the world?” I asked myself. “It’s a hearse! Why would a hearse be driving through the park…and going so fast?”
This was very strange, yet intriguing. I walked closer and hid behind a tree to watch from there. I didn’t want to be seen, so I slowly stretched my neck from behind the tree to get a better look.
The hearse had pulled past the pavilion near an old barn. Funny…I hadn’t noticed the barn. Two men got out and went to the back of the hearse and opened the door.
“It’s a casket!” I exclaimed. “Why would anyone bring a casket to the park? Surely it’s empty?” I reasoned.
Slowly the men sat it on the ground and opened the lid. I was horrified, but couldn’t turn away.
They stretched out their arms and waited. A woman was gently lifted out and placed in a wheelchair.
“Where did the wheelchair come from?” I wondered. Nothing was making sense.
As one man began pushing the wheelchair, I could see that this was an elderly lady.
I couldn’t stay hidden any longer, so I followed. Maybe they wouldn’t notice me, just like the people in the pavilion. I glanced over that way, and to my surprise everyone was gone. Even though it were odd, I didn’t dwell on it. I turned my attention back to the lady.
The barn entrance was shaped like an archway and the men stopped there. Standing in front of her, each stretched out their hands and helped her to stand while kicking away the wheelchair.
No one seemed to know that I was around, so I walked even closer.
Steadying her balance, the men helped her take a couple of steps, but then she stopped. Slowly the lady turned around and smiled at me, then nodded her head.
“Mama!” I shouted. “How could this be?” I questioned.
We had buried her two months earlier.
Turning back around, they walked inside the barn.
“Mama, wait. Don’t go,” I screamed.
I wanted her to hear me, but they kept walking. I tried to go inside the barn, but something held me back.
Once again, I heard shouting and clapping. It was the people from the pavilion!
My mind was reeling…wondering how they’d gotten inside without me seeing them…but it really didn’t matter.
“Mama,” I screamed.
She turned around, looked at me, then smiled.
At the end of the barn, were double doors with people standing on each side clapping and cheering. As the doors opened, a mist came out blocking the view of the other side.
The men released Mama’s arms and she walked. A light shown through the mist. It became brighter the closer she got to the doors. Stopping once more, she turned, smiled, then disappeared into the lighted midst.
And just like that, she was gone.
Confused, I suddenly found myself on the bed. “How did I get here?” I wondered.
Thinking about it, I realized it’d been a dream…but what a dream it was! I saw Mama. She could walk again. She wasn’t in pain.
I’d been concerned if she knew Jesus. She said she did, but I continued to wonder. Every night I’d asked God to ease my heart and that’s just what he did.
God gave me a dream.
It may be a stretch of the imagination, but did I witness her walking into heaven?
Anyway, I’m at peace…I saw Mama.
