Elisha the prophet rose from his chair in the little roof chamber when the Shunammite woman appeared at the door. He told her that by that time the following year she would be holding a baby son in her arms. “No, my lord, O man of God; do not deceive your servant,” she replied incredulously. Her husband was old, and they had given up all hope of having a child. But it was no deception, and she did conceive and bear a son, as Elisha had declared. And when the child tragically died a few years later and his mother laid him on the bed in the prophet’s roof chamber, Elisha came and bent over him – mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands – and restored him to life.
It was the fifteenth day of Tishri, the seventh month. The whole family had climbed the outside stair, with joy in their hearts, to sit together in the small booth they had made on the roof of their house overlooking the square by the Water Gate in Jerusalem. The children looked up proudly at the covering made of olive, myrtle and palm branches, the branches they had helped carry down from the nearby hills. In the square down below they could hear Ezra, the priest and scribe, reading with a passionate sincerity from the book of the law of God. When he finished, he blessed the Lord, whose hand had been gracious upon them, who had restored the exiles out of captivity in Babylon, who had restored Jerusalem through his servant Nehemiah and who was now restoring the covenant between himself and his people. And everyone cried, “Amen, Amen!”
Between them the four men, each holding a corner of the mat, manoeuvred the paralysed man through the crowd surrounding Simon and Andrew’s house in Capernaum and up the outside stair to the roof. Someone produced a knife and, working quickly, they removed a section of the tiles that covered the thick layer of clay and branches over the roof beams. Digging through, they sent a small shower of clay and dry twigs onto the heads of the people in the room below. Jesus watched, without disapproval, as they lowered the man on his mat through the hole in the roof into the hands of the crowd. Much to the discomfort of the scribes who were sitting among them, Jesus spoke twice to the paralysed man. “Son, your sins are forgiven.” And then, “Stand up, take your mat and walk home.” Immediately, the man’s ability to walk was restored; the restoration of Simon and Andrew’s roof would have to wait a little longer.
