Later that year, on another Sunday morning, I searched for him to no avail. He was gone. Rumors were flying as to why he left. He proved himself to be a fickle hero, that’s why. Another less magnetic and less attractive pastor was filling what had been his pulpit. My heart sank.
As the seasons change, so do people. Each one whom we have had on a pedestal and attempted to follow may be here for a season, but they do not stay. They are all fickle heroes. Why can’t anyone just stick around?
Although I try not to elevate anyone in my life to hero status, occasionally there is this one extraordinary person who sweeps me off my feet. In my eyes they are nearly perfect. I want to be like them. I love them. When they become involved in something a little shady, they no longer merit hero status. They are fickle heroes. This devastates me every time. Can’t anyone ever just stay the same?
Maybe you are the type of person who needs a hero to emulate. I know I do. Why do we need them? They fill a hole in our heart that cries out to love and be loved. They inspire us to go further and to do better at whatever we are working on. They give us direction and incentive and they guide us, hopefully, in the right direction. Unfortunately, they will ultimately fail us.
There is a better way: If we will search with open hearts, we will find the One Who does stick around, Who does stay the same and Who is definitely the Hero that we need to pursue. He is not fickle.
He sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)
He will never leave us. (Hebrews 13:5)
He never changes. (Hebrews 13:8)
He is Jesus, the only true Hero. He is all that we will ever need. Because He created us, He knows how to reach us and how to guide us into all truth. He knows us intimately and He loves us. We can safely love Him back. You and I need to give Him our hearts and our lives. To do so means we will never again have to follow a fickle hero. Here is what He is saying to us:
“…For God has said, 'I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.’” (Hebrews 13:5b NLT)
Thank You Jesus!
