Topic: FEATHER (08/20/20)
The writing on the yellowed pages was exquisite, not unlike what we think of as calligraphy. It was artistically formed this way because my great grandfather, Mack, used a quill to write his letters. A quill was a feather, usually from a large bird such as a goose, sharpened into an instrument for writing. He would dip the pointed end of it into an ink well and then write his notes with it. I marveled as I read the words in his old journal that we found stuffed away in a little cardboard box in my grandma’s attic. So, this is where my velvet point ballpoint pen originated: with a feather.

God made such beautiful birds of all shapes, sizes, and colors. These have beautiful plumage that has adorned headdresses and hats, earrings and pins, and many other fashionable items and clothing. A pillow and comforter filled with down feathers make bedding that is seriously soft and cuddly. Feathers are associated with lightness, yet they are amazingly strong. The attributes of feathers are many but most of all they signify protection. Mama bird cuddles her babies under her wings to keep them warm and well hidden from harm. That is the way I think God delights in protecting His children. What a loving picture it is.

“He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” Psalm 91:4 (NKJV)

The world is a scary and unstable place these days, but we must not fear. If we will live under the shadow of the almighty, no plague will come near our dwelling. We are therefore immune to any and all plagues. if we can’t get them, we can’t spread them. We are as safe as a baby bird as we are covered by His mighty wings.
