Adventure: I entered the studio where my solo audition was about to begin. In the front of the studio were four judges seated at a conference table. All of them were blankly staring at me with notebooks in hand. It was impossible to read their faces, and they gave me no reason to be optimistic. I remembered my first teacher’s instruction to calm my jitters: “Don’t look at their faces but look just above their heads. They will think you are looking at them. It makes the process less scary.” When I started to dance, I entered into freedom. I forgot all about the audition and the judges and I just danced my heart out. As I struck my final pose, I looked directly at them. They were still stone-faced and unreadable. Although their faces offered no encouragement, I knew that I had done my best and for a brief moment I found it. It just naturally came across my face. As for those four judges it was nowhere to be found.

I found it again when they called me in to tell me that I had been accepted into their dance company. Their faces were lightened, as they had found it too. It always accompanies good news.

Tragedy: One day I noticed that Angel, my pet bird, was not her usual curious self. I called the avian vet. She got out of her sickbed and met me and Angel at her clinic early on a Sunday morning. It was not here. I left Angel and her favorite blanket with the vet and returned home. It was not there either.

The next morning the phone rang, and I felt my belly tighten. It was the vet bearing sad news: My Angel, my pet, had died. I cried and cried and there was none of it that whole day and night. My husband found a new pet for me and although she will never replace my Angel, she brought it with her.

Conclusion: Up and down we go in this life. Change is the only constant that we will ever know. We can find it if we let God control our lives. What is it? Why, of course, it is a smile.

What about God? Oh, how I want Him to find it when He looks at me. I want His smile.

‘May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace. ’Numbers 6:24-26 (NLT)

Yes, He smiles on us, His children and He grants us peace. Though we have smiles throughout our lives, His smile is the one I yearn for. Do you want it too? Assuming your answer is affirmative, let us see if we can give God cause to smile at us every day.
