After years of fundraising through flea market and concession stand sales, the town was able to build a new lighted ball diamond. The stadium was constructed just in time to host the regional church championships between the Heavenly Halo’s in Paradise vs The Little Hope Chapel from Hell.
Before the game, Coach Jack Yak huddled everyone together, and delivered his rally cry, “Baseball is a lot like church in that many of you attends but few understand. It requires sacrifice, and ‘home” is our final destination. Even though we mess up, we’re still in the game until the last out”
“Play ball” growled the umpire.
Crouching on the bench, Liddell Faith pulled the ball cap over his eyes. If he of Liddell Faith dissed the coach, he may not be forced to play the game.
The Heavenly Halos ascended to a 7-0 lead by the third inning, and another seven by the fifth, increasing the lead to 14-0.
The crowd began going wild and chanted, ‘Here come the runs! Here come the runs
But as the Halo's began getting their feathers ruffled, they started to backslide, and allowed Little Hope to come roaring back like a lion. They scored 6=6-6 in the next consecutive innings.
As his teammate Bean Bag limped off the field, Coach Yak signaled for Liddell to pitch-hit for him.
Liddell walked toward the batter’s box.
“Take the first pitch,” the coach whispered in Liddell’s ear.
At his back. Liddell could hear the opposing crowds taunt “We want a batter not a broken Jacob’s ladder"
Liddell dug his toe into the soft dirt as he stepped up to the plate. Adrenaline and trepidation flowed through his body. His heart slammed against her chest. Sliding his hands up to the bat, Liddell swung with all his might.
With bases loaded and two men out in the ninth, Liddell could guarantee a tie with a home run.
The pitcher wound up his arm and threw a change-up pitch, it flew from his hands like a bullet, the batter connected and the ball sailed in the air before it was snagged by the right outfielder.
Sometimes in the final stretch, our worries and desires for other things enter in and if we forget to choke up on the Word of God. It takes time and patience to persevere. No one is perfect, but we are hopeful for our eternal home base, if we accept God’s love for us. Even though we continue to strike out, we know that God forgives us because of his death on the cross. We will be safe if we continue to trust and obey.
