The restaurant beckoned as it always did at this time of day as she leaned on her cane and willed her legs to carry her up the sidewalk to the entrance. The door felt heavier today, and her arthritic hands nearly slipped on the smooth metal handle. With a groan she managed to pull it open. Immediately the familiar scent of good food welcomed her as she crossed the floor to her usual booth by the window.
As she slowly eased herself into the booth, she sighed with comfortable familiarity. Suddenly she felt just a little younger as she remembered those long ago days spent here with her two young sons. Those two tow headed sons that wiggle and squiggle never still for a moment.
Then as the years went by those two little boys grew into fine young men. Her sons so alike and so different. Matthew was determined to attend college and become a lawyer. Jonathon was born with the music in him. From the time he found a harmonica on the playground till he got his first guitar it was the expression of his soul.
She had raised them to love God and put Him first in their lives. Matthew accepted Christ and was eager to serve God in everything he was able to do.
Jonathon, however, always hesitated to fully give his life to God. Yes, he believed, and he knew his need for salvation but the temptation to be drawn to the wrong type of friends hence the wrong type of music often overtook him. She had prayed, saved, and sent him to Bible college for a semester but even there the world’s music called to him.
“The usual Miss Hanson?”
The waiter stood over her suddenly returning her to reality and the empty booth before her.
“Yes, Joel the usual.”
Joel’s eyes drifted to the seat across from her, “and for him?”
“Yes.”
“One glass of lemonade coming right up,” he said with a gentle pat to her shoulder.
Such a nice young man. Joel seemed to understand her odd request without any questions. Perhaps he knew she was waiting.
She rubbed her right knee remembering all those nights she spent in prayer for Jonathon to return to her. After that last day here when he was nineteen, his brother twenty, she hadn’t seen or heard from him again. Her heart had overflowed with tears so many times.
Over the years she had moved several times and each time she worried. What if he came back could he find her? So, each day she came here because this was the one place that they both had in common.
Was she wrong to indulge Jonathon even a little bit when he wanted money to play a song on the jukebox over there? He liked the rock and roll and especially that song “Jukebox Hero One Guitar” that was his dream. He was going to be famous. It shouldn’t but it made her smile as he thought of him. She had hopes for his music too but that he would choose to use it to glorify God.
Joel sat down the Lemonade and her usual sweet tea.
She sipped it slowly, the restaurant chatter was growing louder but even at that she could hear someone slipping a coin in the jukebox. Suddenly “Jukebox Hero One Guitar,” blared out of the speakers.
Tears flooded her vision as she sat down her glass. Suddenly she was aware of someone standing at the
table. She froze afraid to look up, could it be?
“Mom?” that one word she had longed to hear spoken by that voice she loved
She looked up to see an older man with graying hair and a beard but only for a second and then he was that blond- haired boy she knew so well.
“Jonathon!” she exclaimed as he sat down next to her and took her in his arms.
“Mom I’m so sorry. I’ve been looking for you for months now and then I thought of this place and I knew, somehow, you’d be here. I know you have been praying and you don’t have to worry anymore. I am back to stay. I have given my life to God and only play for him now.
The only music I want to make now is to praise Him for His love and grace. Thank you for never giving up on me.
Her heart overflowed with praise! Never give up!
