The list could go on and on, but not many, and possibly no one realizes that the oldest sidekicks came from Biblical times. And contrary to suggestions, just saying the word ‘holy’ before every word does not make you Biblical. So even before Robin, there were other sidekicks. They were totally obscure and unmentionable because they were not mentioned, until now.
Sesmo met Moses in the Midian desert and immediately became his faithful right hand-man. For 40 years, Sesmo followed Moses and helped him tend sheep in the Midian desert. Unbeknownst to Moses, he was not far off when Moses met God at the burning bush.
While Moses was hesitant to God’s instructions, Sesmo was behind him jumping up and down with flailing arms saying, “Send me to free the Israelites!”
Sesmo vowed his allegiance to the One true God and accompanied Moses on his trip to Egypt. The whole while easing Moses nerves by promising to take Pharaoh out and open the gates that would free God's people. Moses patiently listened to his zealous sidekick. In Egypt, when Moses was front and center to the Pharaoh, it was NOT Sesmo at Moses’ side. It was his brother Aaron. Aaron told Moses that Sesmo ran for Midian. He was never heard of again.
Both Sampson and his sidekick were Nazarenes, though they were complete opposites. Ablamo a meek, weasel-looking type vowed to stay on the straight and narrow Nazarene path. He never drank wine, touched any dead animal nor had his hair cut. And though he did not possess super-strength nor have a way with the ladies like Sampson, he was not jealous of him. He stayed loyal to him for years. It was his honor to be in the shadow of Israel’s judge. Ablamo's theorized and spouted that Sampson needed his assistance to defeat the Philistines. He surmised Sampson's waywardness would not permit God to use him. While Ablamo dodged dead things and sipped on tea, Sampson was crushing the Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. After Sampson’s lurid affair with a Philistine woman got him captured and tortured, Ablamo promised to destroy all Philistines. Ablamo was the one who kept his Nazarene vows, but it was not meant to be. Even while enslaved by the enemies, God granted Sampson the ability to demolish the temple of the Philistine god. Ablamo disappeared with his empty promises.
Then there was John’s unknown sidekick. He and John wandered the desert together for years both wearing camel hair clothes and sharing many meals of honey and locusts. Louqaun would follow and listen intently to John preparing the way to the Lord with good news. John was a voice preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Louquan was the perfect yes-man, mimicking John’s words at the river’s edge as he helped people in and out of the water. He parroted John when he proclaimed the One more powerful to come. Though, when he saw John being dragged off to prison by Herod’s soldiers he cowered away and was never seen again. So close to God and yet too far.
There are sidekicks that have remained in their appointed second-fiddle position in the hierarchy of relationships. There those that have surpassed the popularity and prominence of their superior. Then there are these three unknown Biblical sidekicks that never gained any notoriety, nor props, nor mention at all because they were all talk and no action. And faith without works is dead.
