“You kids be quiet now, Dad wants to listen to the news” cautioned Mom. Every evening between 5:30 and 6:30, my dad would listen to the local and world news on our black and white TV set. I didn’t understand what was so important about news, but my dad seemed to think it needed his full attention.

“The news you need to know,” began the announcer of the world news. My dad hated that line. The announcer would repeat it every evening at the same time and dad would give his negative comments quite often. He suspected they would only give us the information they felt worthy of us common folks. He believed the government withheld a lot of information they did not want us to know for some reason or another.

My father was probable right about the secrets held by top government officials. Hopefully, they keep those secrets for the protection and the good of all U.S. citizens. I am sure the Secret Service is named that for a reason. No doubt, memos labeled “Top Secret” could keep our enemies from knowing the strategies for keeping our nation safe. Yet, that didn’t keep my dad from wondering what might be kept secret that could be beneficial to him, if he only knew. Maybe that’s why he listened so intently to see if he could figure out what was really going on in the world and how he would plan his life to make the best of each situation. On the other hand, maybe he was just hoping for some good news for a change.

Thankfully, there is some Good News for all of us who are listening. The bible is filled with the good news of all Jesus did for us. He was born that he might fully understand the temptations and suffering us humans endure. He died that we might be saved and have a home in heaven one day. Jesus heals our diseases, causes the blind to see, raises the dead, and sets the captives free. Most of us have heard it many a time.

However, there are also many secrets in the Word for those who will take the time to search them out. Secrets which are only revealed to the Christians who diligently search the scriptures for God’s hidden truths. There are also prophecies revealing what will happen in the future, and there are promises that the Lord will lead us in the path that we should go.

It’s OK to listen to the news and keep ourselves informed of things happening in our world. More importantly, though, we should spend as much time reading the scriptures for the good news within those pages. If my father was still alive today, I would hand him a bible and say, “this, Dad, is the News You Need to Know.”

I enjoyed the glimpse you gave into early family life and the character of your dad. Good job tying the news of the world into the news of Christ.

I would have enjoyed knowing how you now view the news of the world and how you were affected by your dad's interest in it.

Fully agree with your comments about concentrating on the Good News. Also, we can read the same
scripture many times and then
God will reveal a special
'secret' to us. That gives us
opportunity to spread more Good News. The Word is amazing.
