The Wonder Weekend

It was our first test as a married couple. Blending our lives and ministries together had been fun, but a challenge. All was going well. We had completed all the requirements to get back to England and had our tickets to return. We thought we were fully supported.

The heat of August in Texas was nothing compared to our shock when the figures didn’t add up. Somehow in the process of combining our supporters we had miscalculated. The sad truth, we lacked $500 monthly in our support.

So, we talked to our treasurer, Allyn.

“Mike, I’m so sorry, but, I can’t let you go until you are fully supported.” he told my husband.

Allyn and I go back many years, having been co-workers in many places around the world. This was the last thing he wanted to do.

We had crunched into my parent’s home with all our worldly goods two weeks earlier. If we stayed longer it would be a real burden. What were we to do?

As Mike and I talked and prayed, we didn’t have an answer.

We had visited all our friends and supporters, literally from coast to coast. Our plane tickets were for Wednesday, and if we didn’t leave we’d lose our tickets. We had no new thoughts and were out of options.

What did God have in mind?

We made several phone calls and let people know, so they could pray. Everyone was doing their part, and these dear friends were already giving.

Mike talked about finding a pastorate, as we couldn’t wait around for support to come in. One church in Pennsylvania offered us the use of their missionary guest house while we looked to the Lord for guidance.

Nothing seemed right, so we placed it in God’s hands.

Dad and mom were distressed. They didn’t want to kick us out of the house, and yet there was no room for us to stay. None of us slept well that night.

Then on Friday afternoon, we got a phone call from a friend in California. Don had a buddy who was looking for a tax break. He would talk to him. On Saturday Don called again and told us that his buddy would support us $200 a month. We laughed as we thought about God using this unsaved man to meet our need. It was very encouraging, but we still lacked $300 a month.

We went to church on Sunday asking the Lord to work on our behalf.

Then the miracle happened. That afternoon the phone rang. Our treasurer called. He was handling the emergency phone calls that weekend. The pastor of an Indian church in CA where we had ministered had called.

The pastor was frantic. “Please, I need to talk to someone about supporting the Ns. They have to get back to England.”

Allyn told Mike that he had never received a phone call like that in over 25 years as treasurer. Then there were other phone calls. Before the afternoon was over, we had our $500 a month support.

Allyn called about 5 p.m. and gave his wholehearted blessing on our return to England.

What a time of rejoicing we had that evening at church.

Then we called our team in England to let them know we would arrive Thursday morning as planned.

We serve an awesome God. He is a God of wonders. How amazing it was to see God put this together, so we could continue serving him.

Early Wednesday morning we headed for the airport, stopping for breakfast at IHOP on the way. Our team working with Gujarati Hindus in Leicester were thrilled. Our Hindu friends and brothers and sisters from Hindu backgrounds had a chance to see God work. News travels fast, and everyone knew we were not returning as soon as planned – BUT GOD.

It's fun to watch God work.
