who demands
a pet in a haste
yet fails to clean
the cage
or takes it for a walk
all’s swayed by impulse
A rash man
was Peter
On hearing Jesus’ leaving
he promised
to lay down his life
But the Master
foretold that he would deny
his Lord three times
before dawn
Cross-examined
at the door by a girl
another girl in the courtyard
and then challenged
by a high priest’s servant
Peter denied it all
Such episode
is too familiar
Vows to the contrary
yet short in commitments
With the mouth
do not be quick
in the heart
do not be hasty
for in heaven is God
and on earth people
so let words be few
declared his wisdom
in Ecclesiastes
Rash is self-sufficient
or overconfident
— it mirrors insufficiency
and fear
Peter’s restored
by Jesus’ grace
so what forms my failure trace
His richest grace displays
May I learn
O, Lord, from Peter’s flaw
his denial before questioners
and Your standing up to inquisitors
I am Yours, Lord
To Your glad service I offer
Help me forsake You never
Seal Your image on my heart
Your presence I prize
Hear this my prayer
