Way back, in the late fifties, Mr Simonds, an expatriate British social worker was posted to a rural community in a foreign country. One day, while conducting an illiteracy awareness campaign, he wanted to test the intelligence of his trainees.
“What is the meaning of coffee Break/Tea Break?” he posed the question. No one put his or her hand up.
“Ok, you go for coffee Break/Tea Break now. During the break, continue discussing the topic. After today’s training continue finding out what it means, even at home. Tomorrow we shall learn more based on your findings.” After this, the teacher continued with the day’s lesson.
Back to the break. The trainees took maize porridge prepared for them and those who had carried some packed eats like sweet bananas, groundnuts or juice took them. In the office, the expatriate may have taken packed coffee, tea or chocolate.
At home, no one had ever heard of tea but every family hard a garden of coffee or at least a few trees of coffee around the home. Pruned coffee branches were good firewood or supports for climbing crops such as beans. Some coffee branches were used for sticks by old men and ladies. In this sense, coffee breaking could be explained. During certain rituals such marriage ceremonies, dried coffee berries were broken and chewed to consecrate marriage relationships.
The following day, a lively debate, moderated by Simonds, was witnessed. Every aspect of coffee ‘break-ing’ was articulated. There was nothing for tea because it was an unknown crop in this part of the world. For one whole hour, all the local trainees described what they had no idea about and only Simonds knew the question and answer.
The evil serpent cunningly lied to Eve… “Did God say…He did want you to be like Him” [paraphrased]. After that, Adam and Eve who were created with divine capacity to name every creature lost a great opportunity to rule over a perfect universe.
Life is an opportunity to fulfill dreams. Coffee or tea are allures of life to distract us from realizing our dreams. During coffee/tea break no one drinks the stuff throughout that time or at all. Many activities are done or nothing is done. Many opportunities, too, are frittered.
