Her gaze traveled to Aunt Irene. The last time she spoke with her, she had received a dressing down regarding her dyed hair. Even though she had tried to get a word in edgewise explaining she had never colored her hair, Aunt Irene didn’t even slow down.
She sure didn’t want to sit by her.
On around the room she looked. There was Cousin Jewell. Why would she want to sit there? The gift she received from Jewell last Christmas had been a box of panties with someone else’s name on them.
She would leave before she sat down there.
Then she spied Uncle Dean. Shivers ran down her back. She could still feel his hands on her as he tried to pull her down on his lap. Even though she had been warned about him, she thought she was safe at his wife’s funeral.
What were her chances of finding someone who actually loved and cared for her?
Suddenly a wonderful sound wafted across the room. Grandma Geller was here. She would know that laugh anywhere. And the chair next to her was empty. In her hurried quest to get there before someone else, she almost knocked over a table with a vase.
Grandma Geller was a safe haven.
No relation at all, Minnie Geller had come to her rescue when her husband left her. The wagging tongues of her own family branded her a sinner and loser. Minnie had discovered her in an empty classroom in the basement of the church, crying like her heart was broken.
Because it was.
Ensconced in the arms of Minnie Geller, she had poured out her soul. As the pain was shared, she felt the love and concern directed her way. That’s when the thought hit her. She had never had a grandma. The love emanating from this warm, soft body enveloped her wounded spirit. Could she be a pretend Grandma?
“Can I call you Grandma Geller?”
With a smile and wiping the tears away, Grandma Geller had responded, “Of course, dear. I would love to be your grandma.”
