Our original plan had been to hold an outdoor service in the large plaza outside of the local community center. The weather since we had arrived had been hot with very high humidity; a condition that we Californians were not doing well with. No matter how much we tried, everything we wore was immediately soaked through and discomfort became a regular pattern. We had not seen a drop of rain until this afternoon, the afternoon before our planned outdoor event, and then the heavens literally poured down rain like few of us had ever seen. This was not a shower event like we were used to. This was real rain and it quickly became obvious that we were doing nothing outside.
Flexibility, though, was our byword and we went to work seeking another plan that could be quickly put into place. Through means that I was never clear about, the community center became available for us to have our event. We had continually run into roadblocks of ministry wherever we went as even the simplest of events required a blizzard of paperwork and the required permits would invariably not arrive until we were on our way back to our home. As a result, the large parks became our focus of ministry and became amazing places where young people were drawn to us and where we were able to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to any who would hear. Now though, amazingly, we had procured a facility for our event in record time and the only response we could have was to glorify God for his ability to make a way where there was no way.
Our expectations were low as we filed into the community center. Everything that we had planned had been for the outdoor venue and none of us was sure how things would go inside. As we began, the crowd indoors was small and not particularly involved. The people of Romania, particularly the younger ones, seemed much more comfortable outdoors since they spent so much of their lives inside. We began our event with little faith, the dark weather outside matching our mood, but God had other plans and those plans would soon be clear for all to see. Inexplicably, as we continued our event, presenting the gospel through drama and word, the people began to file in and continued to file in until the community center auditorium was completely full and then some. Back home so many people in one indoor venue would not be allowed, but they came and we were overwhelmed. God did an amazing work of grace and many heard and responded to the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ. We knew it was a work of God since our faith had been so small, but God has a way of using just a little faith to do amazing things.
As we filed out, we encountered one more amazing reality. The rain had taken away the horrible mugginess and created a beautiful, cool night that refreshed all of us. Our hearts were full and our bodies refreshed as we reveled in all that God had done. The rain had not stopped us, merely moved us in a different way, and through it all God was faithful. In addition, the rain brought the refreshing we needed to complete our work in Romania. It was two weeks I will never forget and to God be the glory for it all.
