“She won’t be mad once we win that prize.” Sarah May’s eyes rolled. “Anyways, how is she supposed to know? She never brags about her ability so I’m just pushing her along. After all, mama left her secret recipe to both of us. She’s just a better baker. That’s all.”
“How you plan to do it?”
Sarah May elaborated on her plan with her best friend Ann. She felt like a school girl keeping secrets from her twin sister. Any thoughts of betrayal were pushed aside like crumbs from their favorite blueberry crumble, also a recipe from their late mother.
The excitement mounted as the day arrived for Abigail to bake her winning apple pie. Sarah May carefully took the wrapped package to her Cousin Pete’s home, almost stumbling over a rock in the dusty road.
“Still warm?” Pete greeted her.
“Of course.”
“What did you tell Abigail this time, Sarah May?”
“That you were still not feeling well grieving over Zac, your horse. She knows the pies cheer anyone up.”
“And she believed you? Ha! That was over a month ago!”
“Abigail will believe anything when it comes from the mouth of her baby sister.”
“You better hope this works, Sarah May.”
“Oh, it will, Pete. It has too. Everyone needs to know about Abigail’s pies. Maybe she’ll start a business in the future.”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, little missy. We have to win the contest first.”
Two weeks later a stranger showed up at the Little home unannounced. Sarah May was just returning from canning her fruits at Ann’s when she overheard the adorable stranger ask for her by name. “I’m looking for a Sarah May Little. Is she around?”
“May I ask who’s asking for her?”
“Jared Munchin, at your service miss.” Jared took a little bow and removed his hat in politeness.
“I’m afraid she’s not in right now. Will you sit down and enjoy a piece of pie? I have one fresh out of the oven.”
“Sarah May’s pies are the reason I’m here. I represent the Munchin Baking Corporation and wanted to speak to her about her winning pie.”
“Excuse me? Sarah May’s winning pie?”
“Yes.”
“Just what type of contest did she win?”
“The annual Munchin Baking Corporation pie contest looking for the best pie in the county. She got the blue ribbon and now we want to know her recipe.”
“It’s our Mama’s secret recipe. God Bless her soul.”
“Can she give it to us? It was part of the winning prize. The best pies get their recipes published.”
“Now, why would she do something like that?”
“Why did she enter the contest?”
“I don’t know. Why don’t you ask her.” Sarah May finally entered the kitchen just as the conversation about the pie was coming to a close and she didn’t like the expression on her sister’s face. It was definitely not one of joy like her middle name suggested.
“How much of that did you overhear? My dear sister?”
“Not much, Abigail.” Sarah May’s tone of voice matched her sister’s. Lots of sarcasm with just a hint of regret.
“Mr. Munchin was just telling me that our mother’s recipe won the baking contest. Our mother’s SECRET recipe. Now when were you going to tell me the happy news? And just when did you bake this amazing pie?”
Mr. Munchin interrupted the heated discussion with, “The contest was held two weeks ago, miss.”
“Thanks for the information, Mr. Munchin, but I believe I was asking Sarah May.”
“Oh, you caught me. It was the day I told you the pie was for Cousin Pete.”
“How could you? Mother asked me to never reveal the recipe to anyone but my own daughter someday. Do you want me going against her dying wishes?”
“Will we be getting the recipe Ms. Little? A promise is a promise.” Mr. Munchin's pleading eyes pointed at Sarah May.
“No recipe of mine is leaving this house just yet. My sister bragged about my baking ability and lied about it too. The pies were not hers Mr. Munchin. Please leave and take the blue ribbon with you. My pies may be the best in the county but they stay here. Good bye.” Having spoken her mind Abigail pushed Mr. Munchin out the door.
