“What’s up?” he asked.
“Run upstairs and get out of that suit and tie. Change into something comfortable. I’ll tell you everything in the taxi.”
“In the taxi? What the heck? Did something happen?”
“No more questions,” she replied. “Go get changed and all will be explained.”
They’d been married for 27 years and she’d never done anything like this. Fear of the unknown tempted him to give in to feeling rattled, teetering on the edge of imminent panic. But she seemed so darn happy with herself, he decided to trust her and play along. He changed clothes and bounded down the stairs two at a time. He was beginning to feel her enthusiasm. But, enthusiasm for what? He had no idea.
She stood waiting at the front door and her radiant beauty reminded him of the young lady gliding down the aisle toward him on their wedding day. As far as Fridays go, this one is showing great promise he thought.
In the taxi she turned and told him the whole story. “You know how, when I go shopping, I take my calculator and make notes all through the store?” He nodded, of course he knew, it was one of her “cute” little idiosyncrasies that drove him crazy. In fact it was the reason that early on in their marriage they had decided it was best if she shopped without him. “And you know how you insisted that, because you work hard and make good money, you wanted me to buy only brand name items?” Again, he nodded, becoming even more confused.
“Well, I have a confession to make. All these years I’ve disobeyed you.” Should he be getting angry, he wondered? “I decided to do my own testing and see if brand names really were better, and you know what? I found that sometimes they were, but very often the store brands measured up just fine. Remember all those years of wondering if ‘full’ even existed with three teenage boys, as endless cereal filled tupperware containers were emptied? Generic! And I learned to make my own laundry soap for just pennies a load. And there were just so many other things I figured out a way to save on.” She was beaming as she bounced in her seat and he couldn’t help but be amused.
“So for 27 years I’ve calculated what I would have spent versus my actual cost and put the difference into a savings account each week!” She proudly handed him a bank statement that showed an amazing amount of money. “And that’s just what’s left after paying for this trip we’re going on.”
He looked out the window of the taxi and saw they were pulling into the airport. “Are you going to tell me where we’re going or should I expect you to pull out a blindfold before we leave the taxi?” he teased.
Her joy was contagious, even the taxi driver was now laughing. “You know how you long to go to New Zealand and explore your roots? But you’ve always made our dreams your priority; starting a family, building a home, the boy’s education. Well now Mr., it’s time for your dream to come true. I’ve talked to your office, your schedule has been cleared for two weeks. I’ve been in touch with your New Zealand kin and they can’t wait to meet us. The last few weeks I’ve been a volcano expecting to erupt! I can hardly believe I was able to keep this inside and pull it off.”
The taxi rolled to a stop but no one got out. The driver turned around and saw tears, hugs, and giggles happening all over his back seat. With a wink he said, “You’ve got yourself a true Proverbs 31 woman there buddy. You two have become my favorite fare in all these years of driving a taxi!”
