Surrounded by Jocks, Brainiacs, Snobs and Losers (or as they called themselves; Party Animals), her group, called many things by the others, named themselves the Champions.
The rules were simple: The Pencil Pushers took turns picking a topic they wished to write about. The other Pencil Pushers, there were eleven in all, wrote one to three sentences on the chosen topic. The challenge was to write a piece, in any genre, and make it read as though including all eleven submissions was the original intent of the author.
The Nit Pickers consisted of seven students majoring in English that accepted the challenge to “grade” the finished work. Analyzing sentence structure and punctuation is what they lived for.
After that it would go to the Googly Eyes, (hey, they picked the name). Consisting of fifteen bookworms, they would rate each work on its readability, believability, creativity, and artistry.
The Pencil Pushers, Nit Pickers, and Googly Eyes called themselves the Champions because they saw themselves as Champions of the written word. They challenged one another for the purpose of fine-tuning their skills.
Miranda felt blessed that hers would be the final entry. Last year Jason had selected “The Meaning of Christmas” as one of his topics. What he wrote had changed her. She understood for the first time the significance of John 3:16 and Jesus became her personal Lord and Savior soon after reading his entry. They’d spent many hours since then reading the Word and praying together.
She’d told him her desire was to write something for their final challenge that would have a similar impact, even if only for one person. He shared with her that, in the four years of challenges, his Christmas entry had been the most effortless he’d submitted, “I wrote from my heart and it was a piece of cake. It almost felt like it wrote itself,” he encouraged.
Because they had all watched her faith grow, she knew everyone was expecting the final challenge to be spiritual. But Miranda surprised everyone except Jason when her topic was; “Religion, Who Needs It?”
Of course, she’d spun everything they contributed into a compelling argument against Religion, and counterbalanced with an invitation to Relationship. She loved watching his smile grow as Jason read it for the first time. “This is a masterpiece, Miranda!” he’d exclaimed.
Her response had been, “I wrote what was on my heart Jason, and just like you said, it was so easy, as easy as pie!”
But the true reward came a few weeks later when one of the Googly Eyes tracked her down. “Your piece on religion really has me thinking Miranda. Can we get together and talk?”
