“No. It’s mine. I found it first.” Dawn held it so close to her body she crushed the flimsy box and pieces flew across the room.
“See what a mess you made?”
“Let’s put it together.”
“Ok.”
For the next five minutes nothing but silence was heard from the bedroom as Sasha and Dawn found all the pieces and started on the puzzle. As they were finishing, Layla poked her head in to see what her girls were up to.
“Oh, I remember that one. I see you found my special puzzle. I guess it is time to tell you girls about our unique ability. You see, your grandmother was a puzzle maker and she inherited (from her mother) the magic to travel into the pictures of the puzzles she made. This was one of the last pictures she made and she gave it to me for my 5th birthday. It was always my favorite.” Layla picked up the last piece to the puzzle and connecting it grabbed her girls hands and closed her eyes.
“I hope you are ready for the zoo! I haven’t been there in years.” With that she jumped on the picture and all three were transported to the penguin exhibit painted on the puzzle.
“Wow. That was fun!” Sasha exclaimed.
“So cool,” Dawn added.
“Let’s walk around a bit before heading back. If I remember correctly the giraffes were right over here.” Still holding tightly to the girls hands she tugged them in the direction of the African safari animals.
Three hours later a hungry and tired Dawn started complaining. “How do we get back?” she whined.
“We find the penguins again and if we stand in just the right spot we will be transported back. The fun part is . . . no time has passed since we visited and so we have not yet missed lunch. I was working on fixing it before we took a little detour. Now where is the path to the penguins?”
“Over there.” Sasha pointed in the direction of the aquarium.
“That’s right. Now hurry. We must do this before the zoo closes for the night.”
Layla and her daughters found the penguins and were immediately in the dark of Layla’s childhood bedroom. “Can we do that again, Mom?” Dawn and Sasha asked in unison.
“We can. After lunch we will find more puzzles. I think I remember a rain forest and a beach scene.”
“Great. Maybe we can convince Grandma to make us a puzzle too.” Sasha fluttered her eyebrows at her mother. “Please?”
“Why don’t we try to do it ourselves first,” Layla replied.
“I think that is a great idea, Mom. I have the perfect picture to draw. I always wanted to experience life on a farm.”
“I think we should go to Italy.” A grinning Sasha linked arms with her sister Dawn and together they traipsed down the stairs two at a time chattering away about their newfound ability to time travel through the puzzles they made.
