Scientists have been searching for years to gain understanding on dreams during our sleep. The search for answers to an unfulfilling life leads many to seek out physics for purpose and guidance. Many look to their dreams for answers, as well.

In my journey to understand how God uses dreams, I discovered many Christians steer away from what is supernatural for fear it sounds mystical. Supernatural encounters are often equated with the enemy and not God. “Supernatural” means something “above or beyond the natural;” “unexplainable by natural law” (dictionary.com). God is mysterious and supernatural.

If we ignore scripture where God used dreams, there would be a large portion of the Bible missing. This would include the foretelling of the Messiah.

As I looked into God’s Word on this topic, I discovered they are like a puzzle. As a child, when I visited my grandmother the one thing we invariably did was to complete a jigsaw puzzle. We started with the borders and worked on one section at a time. Slowly we would get a glimpse of the picture before us. There were times we’d get close to the end to realize pieces were missing. Worse, we had no cover to follow.

Scripture states God will pour out His Spirit upon all people and they’ll have dreams and visions. This promise is repeated in the Old and New Testament yet, in my experience, it’s a topic rarely taught in the church. (Joel 2:28 Acts 2:17)

As I did more research to ensure I was looking at God’s hidden messages from a Biblical perspective, I made a startling discovery - it seems non-believers focus more on their dreams than Christians do. The Bible tells us believers and non-believers recognized their dreams had meaning for their lives. Why then do Christians shy away how God chooses to get our attention in the night? Catching some Z’s are the one time of day I can’t interrupt God.

The Bible states “God speaks again and again, though people don’t recognize it ... when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds.” Job 33:14-15
I began asking God to speak into my spirit while I slept. When I did, I began waking up with a piercing in my spirit knowing it was a word from God. They are like riddles and similar to the way Jesus told parables. They often need explanation and revelation from God.

I didn’t know anyone who had the gift of interpretation. I looked up scripture for insight to the purpose of God’s hidden secrets. I became aware some were prayer strategies, not only for myself, but for others. I took them to the Lord in prayer.

The way God communicated in the Bible is for today. God is innovative and His creativity is endless. I want God to choose how and when He will speak and that includes when I’m asleep.

Understanding the hidden messages of God is a process living in His presence. Without His presence, there are no pieces to fit together, or worse, they are jumbled with no clear direction. I run the risk of trying to orchestrate my life outside of God’s will. I need to tune my ears to hear God.

The more I learn how God speaks in the night, He shows me how they can be tools to witness. Recently I had a conversation with a non-devout Muslim woman. Muslims don’t believe they can receive revelatory messages directly from God.

An opportunity opened to share Jesus by asking if she was aware Muslims have a prayer called salat estacada asking for dreams and visions. I told her the world is fixated on the supernatural and we as Christians hear Jesus directly. “Christians have the Holy Spirit to speak to us and dreams are just one way” I said.

God operates supernaturally in the natural through signs and wonders. God moves through us is to bring Him glory. I pray what I experience with God I can turn the attention towards Jesus.

With God’s help, it’s another tool to revealing Truth to those conducting pagan rituals and looking for supernatural encounters. Sadly, unbelievers look for revelation in the wrong places, whereas Christians stick to what is comfortable and often dismiss God speaking in the night

As a Christian, I want all of God, not just some of God. No matter how God chooses to speak, I can be confident I will hear His voice with clarity.
