During my four years of college, I lived with three different roommates. By senior year, I itched to get my own place, especially after sharing a two-bedroom, one-bathroom flat between three women.
Not owning a car required me to live within walking distance of the university. Apartments near the school cost much more than rentals elsewhere in town, so I needed roommates to help shoulder the financial burden. Thus, having my own apartment was not a feasible option for me.
With just a few weeks to go before graduation, my campus Bible study leader offered to let me move into her house. Trecia and her husband, Jay, had won a trip and would leave before the semester ended. I could spend the last of my college career enjoying a home to myself and still live near enough the school to walk to classes.
After a few polite questions to be sure Trecia felt comfortable with this arrangement, I jumped at the chance to have not only my own bedroom but, for a short time, my own house.
Living alone gave me a new sense of freedom to bring people into my home. I invited a good friend over to talk and to rest when she broke up with her boyfriend. I planned a game night at my new place. And I hosted my small group Bible study for a pot-luck meal to celebrate the end of the school year.
The day before the pot-luck, I started to feel concerned that I did not have enough food to last until the end of the semester, now only a few days away. Nor did I have enough money to buy more food, and I had already eaten the few frozen dinners that Trecia and Jay had left. It seemed odd to worry about having enough to eat, and I knew that, somehow, the Lord would bring me what I needed.
At our Bible study dinner, we had abundant amounts of food. We enjoyed each others’ company, and, at the end of the night, none of the girls wanted to take home their leftovers. This meant I now had cheese dip, chips, cake, and other munchies to get me through the next few days of studying. The Lord had perfectly provided for the needs—and tastes—of this college student.
The hospitality shown to me by Trecia and Jay gave me a peaceful place to enjoy my final days of college. Having my own home, even for a short time, gave me the opportunity to host friends and classmates, especially the young women I led in a Bible study. And the hospitality shown to me by the girls in my small group gave me enough food to last out the week.
Like a gift that keeps on giving, hospitality had caused a chain reaction, a circle of blessing in which God used His children to bless each other.
