Teaching a teenage Sunday school class brings many challenges: getting them to come to class, keeping their attention, and getting them to read the lesson and participate in the discussion. Nevertheless, they always rise to the occasion for class presentations. The presentations help the teacher, Ms. Marcy, to determine their level of growth and know which topics need more teaching.
Sam and Tina, the boldest in class, are excited to be the first to present. They walk to the front; Tina with Bible in hand and Sam with a large bowl of candy.
Tina speaks first. “Good morning class. Sam and I are using candy as an object lesson to encourage y’all to read the Bible. I’ll be reading passages from the Bible.” Tina holds the Bible up.
Sam steps forward and holds up the bowl of candy. “I’ll be using three kinds of candy; Milky Way, Milk Duds, and Bit-O-Honey, to explain the meaning of the passages.”
The class applauds. “If that’s for us, I’m already encouraged. Can I have some now?” Terrence yells from the back causing a ruckus of laughter.
Sam denies him with the shake of his head as he sits the bowl on a table up front. “After our presentation, it’s all yours.” The class applauds again.
Tina steps forward and opens her Bible. “1 Peter 2:2 - “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation....”
Sam holds up a Milky Way. “The Milky Way represents pure spiritual milk, which is the Word of God.” Sam looks toward the back of the room. “Terrence, you’re no baby, but you asked for candy because you desire it. You want it. You yearn for it. That’s the way we are to crave God’s Word. The things we really want, we try to get. We need to get God’s Word because it helps us to grow as Christians.” Sam steps back, and Tina steps up.
Tina speaks poetically. “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. Psalm 119:103.”
Sam holds up a Bit-O-Honey. “This represents the honey sweetness of God’s Word.” Sam paces the floor as he speaks. “Just like we taste candy by putting it in our mouths, we also taste God’s Word by putting it in our mouths; we read It, pray It, preach It, and teach It aloud. Although the sweetness of candy is gone soon after we eat it, God’s Word is sweet forever.”
Tina clears her throat. “Revelations 1: 3 - Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy...... 2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to show thyself approved unto God......Joshua 1:8 - Let this Book of the Law ever be on your lips and in your thoughts day and night.....”
Sam puts the Bit-O-Honey aside and picks up the Milk duds. “Tina just shared some things God commands of us, but we don’t always do what God tells us. These Milk Duds tell that story. Milk represents the Word of God, but what’s a dud?” Sam points to the word on the box. “A dud is something that doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do.” He reaches into his pocket. “For example, a firecracker that doesn’t pop after you light the fuse is a dud, because it didn’t do what it was suppose to do.”
Tina steps forward to address the class. “So when God tells us to read, study, and think about His Word; to crave that Spiritual Milk, and we don’t do what we are supposed to do, what are we?”
The class answers in unison and erupts in laughter. “Milk duds.”
“Exactly.” Tina nods in agreement. “Now for the grand finale.” Tina pauses. “Sam will tell you, and I will show you how the Bible and the three pieces of candy can speak to us.”
Sam holds up each piece of candy as he states what they say. “Crave the Milky Way.” Tina hugs the Bible tightly to her chest. Sam continues. “Don’t be a Milk Dud.” Tina hides the Bible behind her back. Sam finishes. “Get a Bit-O-Honey.”
Tina opens the Bible. “But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. Psalm 1:2”
Sam and Tina bow and curtsy. Ms. Marcy smiles approvingly as the class roars with applause, and to everyone’s delight the candy bowl finally makes its rounds.
