Six year old Mitchell loves to lay on the ground with his face up to the sky so he can gaze heavenward to decide what shapes the clouds are making. He lays flat on his back with the fingers of both hands linked to cradle the back of his head as he squints at the brightness of the cloudless baby blue sky.
When Mitchell’s father, Phillip gets home from work he see’s Mitchell laying on the ground in the middle of the back yard and goes to join him as usual.
Phillip lays flat of his back on the ground next to his son in the same position. “Hi Mitch. What up? There are no clouds in the sky today for you to make out their shapes.”
“Hi Dad.” Mitch smiles at his father. “I’m not looking for clouds today. I was just thinking about God being waaaay up there in all that blueness.” He raises one hand straight up with fingers extended and waves like he’s trying to touch the sky.
Phillip stares into the heavens as he speaks. “What about God being way up there?”
Mitchell returns his hand underneath his head. “Well, that’s a long way up. How does God take care of us and hear our prayers from way up there?”
“Well, son, God is not just up there. He’s everywhere. He’s here.” Phillip lays his hand on Mitchell's heart. “And He’s here.” Phillip lays his hand over his own heart. He lives inside all of us who believe that His Son, Jesus died on the cross for our sins.”
Mitchell furrows his brow, in confusion. “You mean God is in heaven and on earth in us? How can God be so many places at one time?”
Phillip pauses to gather his thoughts to choose his words carefully so Mitchell will understand. “Son, the Bible tells us that God is Almighty. That means He can do anything and everything at the same time. That’s how He’s able to take care of us, make the flowers bloom, the trees grow, the frogs leap, the bunnies hop, the birds fly...things like that. He holds it all together by the power of His might.”
Mitchell exclaims in excitement as he continues to stare up at the sky. “Wow. That’s awesome Dad.”
Phillip smiles in pleasure at his son’s interest in God. “Yes, God’s pretty awesome, and you know what else the Bible tells us?” Phillip asks. Not waiting for a response he continues. “He’s the Most High God. That means no one and no-thing is above Him or even beside Him. He’s in a league all by Himself. He’s Tops.”
Mitchell turns to look at his dad in amazement. “That means that God is even higher than I can see in the sky. He’s up there and down here at the same time. He’s a really big God then.”
Phillip smiles at his amazement. “That’s true. In fact the Bible also tells us that God is omnipresent.” Phillip turns his head to look at his son. “Can you say Omnipresent?”
“Omnipresent.” Mitchell says with ease.
“That means that He’s everywhere at all times. So we are never without His presence. God sees our every need and hears our every cry.” Phillip speaks with confidence.
“I’m glad I believe in Jesus, Dad.”
“Me too son, and because you do, you will go to heaven some day when you die. I pray to God that you are a very old man before that happens.”
“Older than you Dad?” Mitchell asks curiously.
Phillip chuckles. “Yes, Mitch, older than me.”
“Is it going to be as much fun in heaven as it is on earth?” Mitchell asks innocently.
“It’s going to be much better son. Heaven is the highest point of our existence because we will be in the presence of our Father in heaven; The Most High God. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
Mitchell roles over propping up on his elbow to look into his father’s face. “I know what you mean Dad, because you are my father and there’s nothing better than being with you.” Mitchell comes closer and lays his head in the bend of his father’s arm and they quietly stare into the heavens together.
Phillip is so moved that he’s glad the sky has Mitchell’s attention so he won’t see the mist in his eyes. He would not understand the tears of joy.

It reminded me of my young days looking up at the stars with my mom and dad...talking about God looking down at all of us.
Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories and for bringing home an important message.
