Knit, plain, rubberized, lacy, and ribbed.
One sock covers a precious foot,
Another missing, somewhere in the crib.
Little red galoshes sitting by the door.
Waiting for a chance to splash and play.
Destined for some puddle jumping,
If only the rain would let up today.
Pretty pink ribbon-laced ballet shoes
Delicately draped across the rail.
Giggles and lessons begin at 2,
Young ballerinas practice every detail.
Grubby old sneakers block the doorway.
Caked with mud and laces in a knot.
How many times have you been told,
Pick up your shoes, have you forgot?
Worn old work boots sit by the big chair.
Scuffs proudly displaying years of abuse.
Having earned their rest, they air out.
Tomorrow they’ll be back in use.
Black high heals with shiny bows,
In the back of the closet, gathering dust.
Waiting for a chance to dance again.
That overdue date night is a must.
Love comes in every shape and size,
And a family’s story is told by its shoes.
A pair here and there with a tale to tell,
If you look closely and follow the clues.
