She stared through the window. It wasn't the settling dusk that had her edgy. It was the other kind of darkness, which was mushrooming out of the shadows, growing bigger, and coming closer.
“Even the menacing eyes of the check-in attendant were black,” she whispered.
“Hey,” her father's voice boomed, causing her to jump back. “And here's the last of the luggage. Are we going to have a vacation or what?” He laughed, tossing the suitcase on her bed.
Rachael smiled, gathering him in with her eyes and heart. “Yes, daddy. We are going to have a good time together. That is,” her eyes grew big, “if you can throw all of your work baggage down as quickly as you just did my luggage.”
“I think I will,” a smile zig-zagged across all the folds of stress that his face had been carrying. “Nice set-up here. Two adjoining rooms all in one big one.” He met her eyes, “How about a swim before we settle in for the night?”
Motel pools were all the same, and the chlorine made her eyes burn. Mostly she just enjoyed being with her father. She worried about him. His hair seemed to be graying fast over the past few months, and he had grown suddenly older. People trusted and admired him in the community. He was more than just their banker, he was their friend. She was proud of him too. She had only been nine years old when her mother had unexpectedly passed. Her brother, Bud, had been twelve at the time. Despite his busy schedule, their father had managed to raise them. And there always had been plenty of love to go around.
She threw the towel over her shoulders, grabbed her belongings and turned to go. That's when she noticed two tall men, dressed in black suits, escorting her dad out of the pool room. Without thinking, she snapped a picture. She watched as the hall way they walked down became shrouded by darkness. Panic was coming up her throat and tears welled in her eyes.
“Father,” she cried looking up. “You have told us in these last days that darkness would not overtake us like a thief because we are children of Your light. And, I need lots of that Light now. Help me. Protect daddy too.”
She peeked around the corner just as they disappeared into a conference room. She couldn't risk being seen. While her heart was beating fast, she sensed the Presence of God enveloping her. For such a time as this she had learned to pray. Her dad was a man of prayer. He had taught her that the Name of Jesus was powerful, that His Name was above every other name.
Rachael put her ear against the door.
“We expect full cooperation, Gerald. Your bank, like all of them in the USA will crash on the last Wednesday of this month. Until then it will be kept top secret.”
“What about the people trusting their monies to be safe?” her dad's voice challenged.
A low pit snicker caused her blood to curdle.
“The money will belong to the government.”
“The people will lose their investments?” her father's words shot back.
“Well, we are in a new world order now. Nothing will be the same any longer.”
“How are you planning to pull this off?”
“Easy. First you are going to send out a letter to all your customers telling them that we are experiencing a stock market correction. Though this is unsettling, and though something like this hasn't occurred on Wall Street since 2011, you will ask them to be patient and to ride out the turbulence and to stay invested. Don't worry, we already have the letter you will send.”
“How will such deception gain the trust of the American people?” Rachael could hear the pain in her father's words.
“Oh, during the ghastly riots, the president will declare Martial Law, and they will all be obliged to follow, just as blindly as always. You will follow orders, too. Don't risk the life of your daughter over this.”
Hair wet, and breathless, she knocked hard on her brother's door.
“Rachael, what's wrong? I thought you and dad were stopping by tomorrow.”
“Bud, listen to this recording. You've got to broadcast it loud and clear from your radio station for every ear to hear!” she cried. “We must warn the people!”
“For whatever makes manifest is light.” (Ephesians 5:13b).
