told him I can’t wait to go to heaven
get my crown of everlasting joy
he said the Bible is just a bunch of fairy tales
he asked how I can believe in eternal life and heaven
have I seen them
not yet, but I saw the sunrise this morning
it was magnificent
says in the Bible, God made the sun
has it ever failed to rise since you were born
no, I guess not
come, sit at my kitchen table
have a glass of sweet tea
let’s watch through the bay window
see that beautiful eastern bluebird
guarding his babies inside the birdhouse
here comes the female with a cricket
over there, that skedaddling squirrel
has a nest near the top of the oak
when the icy wind howls he snuggles down
and wraps his bushy tail around him
like a warm blanket
look the bluebird’s coming out of his house
dangling a white fecal sac in his beak
he flies it away from the nest to help prevent disease
says in the Bible
God made every living thing
I can tell you they are real
I see them with my own eyes
so what, they are just birds and animals
to me, they’re not
they are masterpieces of God
can you make one
maybe out of wood or plastic
see that tilled patch of dirt where I plant my garden
tiny seeds, but I know they will grow to be
luscious foods, watermelons are my favorite
it says in the book of Genesis, as long as the earth endures
seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter
day and night will never cease
I didn’t know that
have you watched the news lately
why doesn’t God do something
about the mess this world is in
yes, I watch the nightly news
terrible things are happening
in this life you will have trouble, Jesus said
it won’t be like that in heaven
they will neither harm nor destroy
on all God’s holy mountain
straight from the book of Isaiah
I wish I could hope like you do
you can, I’m one hundred percent certain
heaven is real, but even if it wasn’t
I’d still live by the principles of the Bible
can you imagine what this world would be like
if all the Christians were taken out of it
