Akar stood on the cliff overlooking the rushing Tiger River below. This was his favorite spot in the whole kingdom of Afilar. Here he could survey everything which he claimed as his own. His family was complete with two healthy and brilliant cubs in his den, and a mate who was faithful to only him.
Akar suddenly let out a ROAR that would out do any other sound. This was to let all
contenders for the throne know that he was still in control. For ten years Akar had ruled the jungle with an iron claw. He and Adona had raised nine cubs to become giants in the jungle. None could ever take over their father Akar’s throne. One cub unsuccessfully tried to unseat his father, but failed. Akar would have raised ten cubs if Jade hadn’t tried to dethrone his dad. Since that time, none of the other cubs had tried that same Mission.
Akar returned to his lair for lunch. Lovingly, Adona had prepared him a delectable tidbit of raw Gazelle Steak. Akar always ate first, the cubs snacked on the left-overs. Then Adona ate the crumbs or went out and caught herself a nice rabbit roast.
On the 2nd day of jungleusday, a stranger dared to enter the protected area of Afilar. With his nose keenly sniffing the air, Akar rose from his afternoon nap and remarked to Adona,
“Something is wrong. I sense that a strange being has entered my kingdom. “
“You mean OUR Kingdom, don’t you dear? You seem to have forgotten the fact that I’m the one who keeps you in good form and able to look kingly .”
“Good grief, Adona, I can take care of myself thank you. After all, I am the most important ruler and protector of this jungle. Since you went to the lioness conclave , you certainly have become grumbly. Now be quiet and let me do my job.”
WIth his ears up and his nose to the sand, Akar silently crept down the mountain with his paws firmly clutching the rocks . He passed the old knurled pine tree which grew out of the cliff side.
As he came near to the river edge, he saw sticking out of the bulrushes a yellow tail with a brown furry ball on the end .
“That’s strange, it looks and smells like another lion is in my kingdom. How dare he venture into MY area. I’ll take care of him right now.”
With a vicious leap, Akar landed on that tail. The other animal turned over with all four claws extended, ripped into Akar’s ribs. Akar immediately grabbed the interloper by the throat and tore the skin. The blood splattering, the two wrestled angrily until Akar was weak from loss of blood. He fainted on his side, breathing heavily. His lungs hurting, his ribs broken , and big gashes in his sides, Akar weakly gazed up at his adversary.
Standing over Akar was a young, bloody, but confident proud lion. He had a haughty grin on his face as the blood trickled down his chin. “AH, I got you didn’t I, old Akar. I told the cats over in Scotts Glen that I could take your crown away from you, and I did it. Me and me alone. Now go back and tell your pretty mate how Leo Lion humbled the great Akar. I feel so good about all this, that I might just want the reward of your mate, Adona . I’m sure she will follow me as queen of the kingdom .”
Akar only looked up at the sky and moaned. He was truly beaten. How could his mate look at him and want him back. How could he tell the cubs he had been de-throned? He would be ridiculed all over the jungle. His name would be laughed at. His magnificent mane would go uncombed and he would show scars from the battle. His life had ended. Dejectedly, Akar struggled into the deep jungle limping along the way.
Akar found a deserted meadow, lay down in the soft grass, and closed his eyes. He wondered what eternity would be like. Was there any life after death? Akar slept deeply.
Rousing from his labored sleep, Akar felt something licking his wounds and purring as it nuzzled his ribs. Slowly opening his eyes, Akar saw Adona loving him back to life.
