Leaning against his favorite old stump, Little Lemon began dreaming of all things he thought he wanted to do. Lemon thought of all the places he had never seen or adventures which he had never experienced.
“ I have never been anywhere or seen the world, I never get to do any thing exciting. Why can’t I go somewhere and see different animals and things? Phooey, my life is so boring.”
Out of nowhere there came a Plop, plop, plop on Lemon’s head.
“Hey, stop that, whose up there?” His eyes fixed on the top of the tree, Lemon discovered a bushy tail dangling from the top of the tree.
“Who are you and why are you plopping all those nuts on me? Now I’ll have a head ache all day. Come down here so I can see who you are.”
Suddenly an irritating, scratching noise came slivering down the bark on the nut tree. Out of the leaves emerged a glorious, long – haired, black kitty.
“What’s your name kid?” asked the kitty .“You know that I’m supposed to eat you don’t you, you being a mouse and all that?”
Lemon shook his little fist at the kitty replying, “My name happens to be Lemon, and you better not get your teeth near me. I’m very strong for my size and I bite hard. I just wish I was as big as you , ‘cause then I’d bite you really bad.”
“Oh listen, Lemon, let’s be friends. I’m not hungry right now, so just relax and let’s do something fun, like playing tricks on the big great dane that lives in the farm house over there,” pointed the kitty with her paw. “He gets so mad at me since he is chained up and can’t run to catch me. He sits there, growling and barking while I run around him in circles. It is almost like music, me laughing and him barking.”
I wish I could run that fast and have as much fun as you do,” lamented little Lemon . “By the way, I don’t know your name, kitty.”
“Now don’t laugh, but they call me Pussywillow. My owners thought I was cute and soft like the pussy willows growing in the pond.” I wish my name could have been a fancy name . Oh well you must take what you get,” meowed Pussywillow
“I don’t have to be a mouse. I want to be a bird so I can fly over the houses and trees, looking at all the sights in the world, “ cried Little Lemon
“You don’t want to be a bird, because they get shot out of the sky by humans, that’s not fun.
“What would you rather be if you weren’t a cat, Pussy Willow”
“Long time ago, I thought about being a race horse and winning all those medals, getting flowers around my neck. Then I decided it was too much like work. I would really rather play and sleep all day.”
“ I wanted to see the world, but I guess I never will,” sighed Little Lemon.
Pussy Willow purred back at Little Lemon, “ There’s much you can see in your world if you just look for it. The birds don’t see a lot of the things down here which you can8 see. Besides, God made you the way you are so you can do the work he has created for you. I learned along time ago from the wise old Owl who lives in the hollow Oak tree, if you use the talents you have been given, God will be pleased and then He can use you.”
“You are probably right, Pussywillow , I will try to be happy no matter what. I shouldn’t try to be something different than I am.”
“Good for you Little Lemon , also you need to remember to not play with cats that are hungry.
