I am often short-sighted. I focus on what is happening around me and get distressed at what is reported in the news as the media focus on the bad stuff, as if good news is not news at all.

So I often think of the need to see the big picture and to see God’s perspective. When Jesus was about to enter Jerusalem long ago he wept to see the ignorance and unbelief in that city. I read recently that the word ‘wept’ means a great heaving of the chest with the sobs of a soul in agony. What a description of how Jesus felt at the short-sightedness of the people.¹

“If you had only known what would bring you peace” he said. He, the Prince of Peace was about to ride into their city, and they didn’t know it.

Later the apostle Paul wrote ‘He himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility’.²

I need to make a conscious choice to open my eyes and see Jesus, to read and hear the good news of what God is doing in the world. A wonderful book is titled just that – Look What God is Doing by Dick Eastman. God is working in the world in the midst of darkness. As they say, the light shines brightest before the dawn or in a dark place.

So, what is the good news, and what do I need to know? What are some of the good things happening in the world today?

I know that God loves me. John 3:16
I know that God knew me before I was born. Psalm 139:13
I know that God has a good plan for my life. Jeremiah 29:11
I know that there is a wonderful home waiting for me in eternity. John 14:1

I know that many are coming to faith in Jesus all over the world, often through dreams and miracles. I know that God is working in my own city and neighbourhood as I see changed lives, forgiveness take the place of bitterness, and former life-styles overcome as friends live out their new lives in Christ.

I lift up my eyes and see Jesus. Although I know so little, I try to see the big picture and know that God holds everything in his hands. With him I am safe.
