Absent from school for a few days due to sickness, Mike Darvish, nothing more than a vague acquaintance of Pedro Zuniga at the time, was flabbergasted on his first day back at the sight of Kenneth Aaron’s authentic Voltron toy. On the next day, one of the Voltron Five, Austin Abel, was absent. Mike Darvish, severely frustrated at the misfortune of getting sick at the same time the first elite social group of his youth was forming, was immediately seated at Abel’s desk that morning, moments after becoming the first to discover his absence. Darvish masterfully persuaded Aaron to allow him into the Voltron Five as a permanent replacement to Abel, selling him on his expertise of locating and designing outdoor and indoor realms for action figure enjoyment.
Pedro Zuniga watched from across the classroom as Mike Darvish snaked his way into the group, taking over a spot that had already been spoken for. As Mike’s grandiose eruption of excitement made obvious that his spot was no longer open, Pedro immediately sprang from his desk and confronted Kenneth Aaron. Darvish returned to his assigned seat, but watched keenly, as did Cutter.
Pedro eloquently stated his case, loud enough for the whole class to hear:
“Kenny, I only wanted to be in the group to see your cool toy. I only wanted to play with it for just one day, to see if it was just as cool as it looks on the commercial, so then I could tell my parents, who know how much I love Voltron, how much I would play with the toy if they got me one for Christmas. I realize Mike Darvish is a pretty cool person to have in the group, but the fact that you didn't even think to mention to him that the spot had been reserved for me makes it clear that you either cared too little to remember, or you cared too little to honor your commitment. I would never want to stand in solidarity with a man so careless about preserving the principle of honoring thy word.”
Mike Darvish was floored by what he had just witnessed. The teacher entered the room a moment after Pedro finished, as he was returning to his desk. At lunch, Mike and Cutter together approached Pedro to inform him of something Mike had only learned after his discussion with Kenneth – that Cutter’s grandfather had purchased him the same Voltron toy the night before as an early Columbus Day gift. Mike had therefore declined his invitation to the Voltron Five, and instead issued Pedro an invitation into the "Voltron Three", a superior organization in Mike’s view, since
with two hands each, three people, not five, would be the optimal group size to use the toy.
In the following weeks, Mike Darvish launched an extensive campaign to expose Voltron Five as a front for a Playgirl-reading masturbation ring, all unproved propaganda, of course. Pamphlets were distributed with headlines such as “Voltron Five – A Few Dudes Too Many”, or “Voltron Five – Cause You Can’t Form a Circle of Three.” The impact was swift and severe. One by one each member took extensive measures to clear their name of any association with Voltron Five. Austin Abel was the last to give in, determined to stand by his oft-bailing best friend, a decision that would change his life forever. Within one month, the name Voltron Three would never be heard again, as Mike Darvish explained the purpose of Voltron Three was to rid the world of organizations of such filth like that of Voltron Five, and once the task is completed, the group believes in disbanding and reforming under a new name, as called upon in future crises. He also announced, however, that Cutter and Pedro Zuniga had officially been appointed lifetime members for all further tri-councils.
As for Kenneth Aaron, his friendship with Austin was never the same again, for anytime during school or out in public, all the way through graduation day, every time any student saw Kenneth and Austin side-by-side, whether it be in the hallways, the classrooms, the shopping malls, the restaurants, or anywhere kids congregate outdoors, sporadic shouts of “Voltron-Five!” would echo freely, much to the delight of Pedro Zuniga.
