“Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty, come get your cream.”
"There is my mistress calling me again,” meowed Miss Kitty. “She thinks I have nothing better to do than to wait for her call and then come running to greet her. But then, I probably don’t have much else on my mind in the morning.”
Miss Kitty was a beautiful Black, long-haired female, independent and snotty kitty. She thought she was much better than the average cat. She probably was. Pride comes before a fall, and Miss Kitty was really proud of her long luxurious tail. She flashed it around frequently under the nose of that big lazy dog.
Now Mop Top was a brown furry Springer Spaniel. She was quite old and had been around the circuit for years. She had witnessed many brawls and bad language in her day. She got her name when she came to this dwelling, looking like a big furry mop. She was unkept, dirty and looked like she hadn’t had a bath in years.
Miss Kitty immediately stuck her nose in the air and snorted, “You stink, don’t come near me, the smell might jump over to my beautiful fur coat.”
“Listen kid, Cats like you are a dime a dozen. I’ve chased so many up trees that I’ve stopped counting, Habark, Habark. Just wait till I get your head in my mouth and then see what a prissy kitty you are.”
“Just try it buster brown and I’ll scratch your eyes out. Remember, I was here first and my mistress loves me best. Besides, I catch all the mice and rats around the house,” meowed Miss Kitty. “What do you do that could possibly be worth while for the family?”
“I’ll have you know that I walk my mistress out to the mail box everyday to protect her from all the traffic. Of course, the cars almost run over me, since I can’t hear them coming,” growled Mop Top.
So the Arguments went on, day after day, between the two rivals. Each one thinking they were the most loved. Mop Top kept chasing Miss Kitty and Miss Kitty would tease Mop Top relentlessly.
One day, something delightful happened, Mop Top lost her heavy shaggy coat of fur. This nice lady came to the house and shaved her, almost to the skin. Mop Top emerged from a dirty dog into a beautiful fair-haired show pooch.
The contest to see who was the fairest in the land heightened. Miss Kitty tried very hard to be a dignified socialite. She kept her paws well trimmed and her lovely black fur licked softly.
Mop Top on the other hand would stand in the middle of the yard,, feet spread apart and tail pointed up, as if she were ready for an AKA dog show.
This competition continued for several months creating quite a stir among the neighborhood. Suddenly, news came down from the mansion, “We are going to sell the house and move. We’ll be leaving in three weeks.”
“Oh, no,” Mop Top and Miss Kitty chimed in together. “What will we do, where will we go, will they take us with them?” lamented the two proud animals. “We’d better be extra good so they will want us.”
For two weeks they were extra good. Then the verdict came down, “We’ll take Miss Kitty with us and give Mop Top to the fine family who shaved her fur. They will love her and keep her groomed nicely.”
Miss Kitty and Mop Top looked at each other with tears in their eyes. “I’ll miss you, Mop Top. I have kind of grown to like you and had fun letting you chase me. We won’t see each other again. Take care of yourself.” With that she rubbed up against Mop Top‘s front paws and purred a tender good-bye.
Mop Top returned the rub with an affectionate lick on Miss Kitty’s ears. Thus, the two former rivals parted sadly, but as friends.
