“Oh dear,” she says, distressed. “I don’t know why my hands shake so much.”
Already she has forgotten the big words the doctors tried discussing with her; dementia, Parkinsons, tremors and the like. Perhaps there is a blessing in forgetfulness; these words put no fear in her as they do in me.
“Your cup is running over,” I tell her, trying to make a joke of it. “Just like your life. You have been and still are such a blessing to everyone who knows you.” She smiles.
Slowly she sips her tea as I read to her from Psalm 23; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life…
“And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!” she finishes triumphantly. From her excited hands I take the empty cup and slop-filled saucer and put them on the table. There are only a few spills on her blouse.
I am excited to see that the Word of God is still active and alive in her. From a life immersed in love for her Saviour spring wells of love and joy. The joy of the Lord bubbles up and overflows, it cannot be hidden.
Another day I am reading in the first chapter of Philippians. I pray ...that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight ... filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.
I see her face light up with the glory of God, and I am humbled. Dementia may have obscured her knowledge and depth of insight, but her love for God is undimmed.
As I come to read the Word of God to her I too am blessed. For too long in my own busy life I have neglected making time for quiet meditation.
Thank you Lord for this opportunity to immerse myself in your word and take this daily time of quietness with you and with my aunt as I share her final journey.
