We were at a house fellowship some time back. The adults were having a discussion in the living room and the kids, about ten of them, were playing in one of the bedrooms upstairs. They were running, jumping, screaming and also had their music going on. Suddenly one of the dads jumped up from his seat and in a matter of seconds he was upstairs. Needless to say, our discussion stopped; we all wanted to know what was going on.

Moments later he descended carrying his 3 year old son. “I apologize for leaving like that but I heard my son screaming in pain.” He explained, as he made his way back to his seat.

A parent can distinguish their child’s voice from all the others. Although there was a lot of noise upstairs, this dad not only recognized his son’s voice but was able to identify what type of sound the voice made. Why? Because he spends time talking to their child every day and in the process learned the sound of their voice.

While were glad that this had not resulted into an emergency situation, we learned that such interruptions can be God’s way of telling one to refocus. Earlier on we had veered off topic and were now operating in the flesh. I’m not sure whether we had gone too far the left or right but somehow we found ourselves in a political argument seeing as the presidential elections were just around the corner. Emotions had been running high, there was a racket in the house and at that point, very few of us if any, were hearing God’s voice. It seemed like that small disturbance is what we needed to get back on track – being led by the Spirit.

We cannot completely avoid all the noise in the world but sometimes we do create it ourselves, and unnecessarily so, such that instead of hearing God’s voice, the only thing we hear is our own noise. Had the little boy not made a sound that caught his father’s attention, it is more than likely that we would have left the fellowship without having heard our Father’s voice.

Another problem we face today is not that there is too much noise in the world but we are too busy. We do not spend enough time with God in prayer to learn the sound of His voice. When we spend time conversing with God, we speak and He listens; He speaks and we listen – that’s the only way we will be able to hear His voice.

Each day we have decisions to make – some big, others small but both are able to make significant impact in our lives. At a crossroads, a Christian who spends time in prayer never wonders whether to go left or right. Right in the middle of all the noise, they are attuned to God’s voice enabling them make life saving choices. Not only do they read but they hear God saying, “Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.” (Proverbs 4:27 ESV)

Like this dad who picked out the sound of his son’s voice amid all the others, we should identify God’s voice in the midst of all the noises of temptation and corruption. Hearing God’s voice should make us move (or jump) in the right direction. The Great Shepherd recalls us whenever we go astray as written in Isaiah 30:21 ESV, And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
