“And here is our keynote speaker,” Satan said. The lake was choppy, spitting sparks and flames. He batted away an irritating fireball from an infernal whitecap and continued. “I present to you The Prince of Mississippi!”
The Prince sauntered to the microphone through the scorching waters and glared at the crowd. How he hated them! Of course everyone hated everybody down here. The boiling lake seemed to increase in turmoil as he settled in before the horde facing him. Following a few opening remarks, the Prince relayed the story they all were waiting for.
“I am a prince. I brook no dissent from my minions. They are under my authority and must obey me, just as I am under authority;” he glanced with great malice at Satan, “and I must obey the commands given from my superior.
“There was a church once in which revival had begun. They were experiencing miracles, signs, wonders; incredible healings – all given by…” Here he stopped, his lips compressed, and those in the front could see the inner turmoil with which he struggled. He finally said the words. “…the Lord Jesus Christ.” His useless resistance caused additional sweat to cascade from his horny brow and his stench to increase threefold.
“I had a job and knew these people had to be diverted. Two normally reliable demons named Salt and Pepper came near. I grabbed each by his neck and gave them orders: ‘Kill the revival!’ They cowered before me as they always did and took wing for that church.
“One night the congregation rose up in mighty worship and lo and behold! One of the singers in the worship team cried out, ‘Look! Gold dust!’ Sure enough my boys had created a diversion straight from…well, you know.” The prince bared his fangs in what many in the audience took as a grin; others weren’t so sure.
“The gold dust started as a sprinkle at the front, then began to rain. The keyboard player stuck out his hat. ‘Yes, it’s gold!’ he shouted.
“The music stopped and a sense of awe came upon everyone. Then a woman in the front row scrambled onto the stage screeching, ‘I want some!’ That started a mad dash toward the front, people climbing over each other, adults pushing children out of the way, everyone trampling the weak. It was delicious!
“Moments later a person in the rear of the room called, ‘It’s pouring gold dust back here!’ Boom! Half the people turned and ran to the new source of blessing. (Ha, ha, I use that term advisedly.)
“It was a glorious thing to behold, and I began thinking about promoting Salt and Pepper. Befitting their names they had spiced things up. But then…” He shook his fists in frustration. “…the pastor said in a voice that cut through the uproar, ‘In the latter days many will be deceived. This is fool’s gold, a work of the enemy.’ And they listened to him.” The grinding of the prince’s teeth caused many to wince as they remembered chalk on a blackboard.
“That pastor restored order, even as I was bellowing at my demons, ‘Don’t let that happen!’ Every last person who had collected a share of gold dust brought it forward and deposited it in a container on the pulpit. They repented of their lust as I burned with loathing. When the last member of that church confessed and was forgiven, I dispatched Salt and Pepper to the dungeon where they stayed in chains until we all came here.
“Well, I got my revenge. The church planned to use the gold for evangelism outreach. Just as they turned it in for valuation I changed it to pyrite. It truly became fool’s gold.”
Two demons in particular hissed louder than the rest as he exited the stage.
