“Beautiful, beautiful…Jesus is beautiful and Jesus makes beautiful things of my life…”
Does that old song ring familiar? It was the wedding song I picked when I walked down the aisle more than five years ago. I felt it was the perfect song to capture all the many wonderful things that God has done in my life. People say that the bride is always the prettiest girl in any wedding occasion. And of course, I believed I was the most beautiful woman in my wedding! My husband did, too!
But much as I felt so beautiful that day, I wanted to remind myself and show our family and friends that Jesus is the reason why that moment was beautiful. As I walked down the aisle, I saw flashes of His abundant grace and tender mercies so beautifully splattered in my own life, my family, my waiting groom, and even in the innocent faces of our little flower girls.
More than five years later, the song remains special to me. I have come to realize that our outward surroundings do not determine what is beautiful in our lives. We may be living in our dream house or driving the latest car or on top of our career yet feel so empty inside. On the other hand, we may be going through a deep and dark valley fighting a long-time illness or facing unexpected snags in our plans yet ironically feel much whole and stronger.
Strange, isn’t it? You know why? Because it is Jesus who puts real beauty in our lives. Without him, things would not have color and joy. The touch of God’s beauty is best seen in strange, unexpected places. A place, a situation, a person, a choice, a job – these things only become beautiful when we see Jesus in them. Come to think of it. Do you think heaven would be as beautiful if Jesus is not there?
There are many times when I get tempted to sulk in my petty disappointments and frustrations but what always brings me back to my senses is the constant reminder that Jesus is the author and finisher of my life. As such, I know that He always sees the bigger picture and is carefully making something beautiful out of all the events and happenings in my everydays no matter how mundane I may see them with my myopic eyes.
I hope that for the rest of my life, my heart will always sing, “Beautiful, beautiful…Jesus is beautiful and Jesus makes beautiful things of my life…”
