Exodus 23:20? I’ve read this verse before but I can’t remember it. Exodus 20 has the Ten Commandments but what is Exodus 23:20?
A verse had popped in my mind when I prayed. I knew it was from God. Or was it? Exodus 23:20? I started to look it up but thought it would be odd to suddenly start flipping pages in the middle of a church service. I waited, impatiently. Had God really spoken to me?
As soon I could I turned to the verse: Israel was ready to enter into the promise land and God was giving them final instructions, “Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.” (KJV)
Wow! Was God imparting to me the same assurance? Could it be? I kept reading. He promised to wipe out all of Israel’s enemies if they followed His guidance. But He was not going to hand over the entire Promised Land at one clean sweep “…By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land” (verse 30).
If verse 20 was given to me as a promise, was verse 30 also? And did it have any connection with the Exodus 23:20 verse?
I thought, I prayed, I analyzed. There was no other way: if Exodus 23:20 applied so did the rest of the passage.
He was there, going before me, to help as I followed His instructions. However, it was not going to be one of those miraculous life changes I’ve heard about. “By little and little” overcoming this pagan territory full of the wild beasts which had been preying on me.
33 years later, the “land” is still being conquered. Some beasts attack occasionally, ones I thought had been put away already, and I imagine they will not all be completely vanquished before I receive my eternal inheritance.
“By little and little…”
One day, soon, my exodus and my hope!
