For the P.E. softball team
I guarded my heart
By losing interest in sports
My first boyfriend dumped me
For my best girlfriend
I guarded my heart
By not dating in high school
I struggled to maintain a 4.0 GPA
I dropped to a 3.2
I guarded my heart
By dropping out of college
I was passed over
For promotion to a better job
I guarded my heart
By settling for less
I was disappointed again
By my latest online dating disaster
I guarded my heart
By vowing to remain single
I considered my life
And found it lacking in joy and intimacy
I guarded my heart
By no longer considering my life
I was bitter and lonely
Angry at God and cursing my life
I had guarded my heart
To no avail
I read that a guarded heart
Is the wellspring of life*
I despaired for my life
And discovered this
Whoever wants to save his life will lose it
Whoever loses his life for God will save it**
I regarded my heart
And threw off the jailer
Of my mis-guarded heart
And embraced Life
*Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NIV1984)
**For whoever wants to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for me will save it. Luke 9:24 (NIV1984)

This stanza especially struck a chord with me:
I was bitter and lonely
Angry at God and cursing my life
I had guarded my heart
To no avail
