In true sibling fashion they would often be at odds with one another. It wasn’t that they didn’t love each other; it was just that sometimes they had a hard time getting along. It was often two against one in varying combinations and on this bright Saturday morning it was no different.
It just happened that the two older girls were clearing the table after breakfast one morning when they noticed that the pitcher of grape juice had only a little bit left in it. They both agreed that it wasn’t worth putting the whole pitcher back in the refrigerator, just for that little bit. But what should they do with the left over grape juice? Should they throw it out? Maybe they should just drink it?
As they gazed at the miniscule amount in the pitcher, a brilliant beyond brilliant idea flashed into their minds. What if they used the grape juice to make a “special” brew for their younger sister? They could put all kinds of things in the grape juice, like milk, mayonnaise, salt and pepper, mustard, Tabasco sauce and maybe even some BBQ sauce? They had it all planned out: they would tell her what a great sister she was and how they had made a very amazing drink just for her because she was so special to them. And oh, what a surprise she would have! This would be the best prank ever!!
And it went just like they had planned, well almost. . . There was the moment when she took her first swig and attempted to swallow it. The look on her face was priceless. It was even better than they had imagined!
The two connivers’ laughed uproariously, and were so caught up in their practical joke that they didn’t even notice when their sister ran out of the room.
They laid on the floor howling with laughter and glorying in their success and were oblivious to the new presence that had come into the room. In the midst of their celebration, they looked up to find their papa watching them. Immediately the laughter stopped as they stared in astonishment at their father! Saying nothing, he calmly took the glass filled with the potion, poured it evenly between two new glasses and quietly said, “You have ten minutes to drink all of it!”
The two girls stared in stunned amazement. Did he really expect them to drink that stuff? How were they ever going to get it down, it must be horrible! However, they knew a thing or two about their father, the first was that he wasn’t joking and the second was that the consequences of NOT doing what he said were not even worth considering.
The silence was deafening as they watched the clock on the wall tick its way ever so quickly to the ten minute mark. Waiting for the last possible moment, they gagged and swallowed that horrible drink down to the very last drop. Each in their heart, promising that they would never do something so stupid again!
The moral of this story: always throw out incriminating evidence before being caught by a wise and discerning father!
