The best things about a small town fair are the local booths. After you let the kids have a few rides on the carousel and flying swings, you pass up the fried dough and games of chance to see how you can support your neighbors. After buying a hotdog at the Humanities Club booth, you wander through the exhibit hall to see who grew the biggest pumpkin and who baked the best apple pie. You shoot a few baskets at the Volunteer Firefighter’s booth and stop for a brownie at the Senior Center bake sale. On your way to the 4-H petting zoo someone hands you a cold cup of soda.

Surprised, you stop to ask, “How much?”

The teenager standing in front of the church booth smiles.

“Nothing. It’s our gift to you because Jesus loves you.”

The refreshing drink in your hand, you wander on, contemplating the nature of giving.

Christians have received the ultimate gift – God’s Son. He willingly came to die for our salvation and because the scripture tells us to be like Him, we in turn should give gifts to others. In Matthew 10:8, Jesus told His disciples to give as freely as they had received.

But what are we to give? The command included announcing the Kingdom of God, healing the sick, raising the dead and casting out demons. Maybe He hasn’t called you to fight death or demons, but everyone can all tell someone about Jesus and the salvation He offers. And anyone can all call a sick friend to offer a meal or a ride to the doctor.

Or maybe all you need to do is follow the example of the teenager at the fair. After all, Jesus uses a cup of wine and piece of bread to remind us of His gift. In Mark 9:41 Jesus tells His disciples that if they give someone a cup of cold water in His name, they won’t lose their reward.

So when you see your friends and neighbors at the fair of life, spending their money on that which is not bread, think about the simple refreshing gift you can offer them. When they buy greasy fried dough, offer them the Bread of Life. When they look for thrills on the miniature Ferris wheel, offer them the joy of walking with Jesus. When they toss a ring to win a cheap trinket, offer them the Pearl of great price.

I grew up in a small town and your article brought back some nice memories. Giving is what Christians should be all about--especially letting others know about the greatest gift, Jesus Christ. Well done.
